A Flawed Masterpiece

This game has it's issues, not doubt. Poor FPS performance in towns, and a story that ends a bit too abruptly (DO THE SIDE-QUESTS BEFORE YOU DO THE MAIN GAME, TRUST ME). The MTX are just parts of the deluxe edition being sold back to us in pieces, with no baring on the actual game. You don't need to buy any of that crap; it's totally inconsequential.

But..........what's here is a beautiful successor to one of the most underrated games of all time.

The vocations are fantastic, the combat is the best in the genre, and the world is absolutely stunning to look at.

If you aren't playing this because of the noise of some angry kids on social media, and some clout chasers on YouTube, then you're missing out.

The exact same thing happened with DD1 12 years ago. People gave it poor reception, reviewers crapped on it, and barely anyone played it. And then, YEARS later, people gave it a shot and realized how good it was, and what they missed out on because of the influencers.

Don't let that happen again...you'll regret it.

Could be the worst TEKKEN game I've ever played.

In Bandai Namco's quest to increase aggression, they've completely neutered the systems and neutral that define TEKKEN.

Out with poking, timing mix-ups, and footsies. In with forced unearned mix-ups on block, and non-stop immediate timing responses.

With no adequate defensive systems to balance out the offensive ones, the game has devolved into a chaotic mess of who can oppress the other player with their buttons more. And it's lead to this game having a clear top 8 characters at launch, that are almost untouchable.

It's a gorgeous game, has a fantastic story mode, and is loaded with features. But the game-play that underpins it is a bastardised version of the series.

As a long time loyal TEKKEN player, I can honestly say, this goes right alongside TEKKEN Tag 2 as the most volatile, stressful, un-fun TEKKEN game ever made.

In addition to the game-play being volatile, it's still full of bugs that can crash the game outright, and it also has a lobby system that is so bad in makes Arc System Works blush.

Hoping the game gets better in future updates, but I will not be holding my breath.

UPDATE

We're almost 2 months in, and this game's warts are out for all to see. There are no punishments for rage quitters and cheaters. There are no benchmark requirements to prevent you from being forced to play this game vs someone running the game at 20fps.

Ranked isn't worth playing until the rampant issues with the mode are addressed. They won't be though. The devs are too focused on updating their new DLC micro-transaction store to notice.

March 27th 2024 UPDATE (DMCA'ing YOUTUBERS!)

Hey guys,

Guess what?

More terrible decisions from Bamco!

YAY!

As of today, modders are now put on notice! Bandai is going out of their way to copyright strike any YouTube videos that showcase mods.

Don't be surprised if popular modding sites are taken down in the near future.

All for the sake of $4 costumes.

Oh, and that plugging/cheating issue I discussed? Yeah, they still haven't addressed that.

As I said, Tekken store is their sacred cow now.

I'll be back with another update the next time Bandai pulls another assclown move.

See you then!

March 29th 2024 UPDATE (WE FORTNITE NOW!)

LOL I'm back so soon!

We got a battle-pass now!

GIVE BANDAI ALL YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!

April 2nd 2024 UPDATE (THEY DONE BROKE THE GAME!)

Y'all didn't expect this to be a good update by this point right?

Welcome to Tekken 8. When we do our "Bug Fix" patch, we don't mean that we're removing bugs from the game. What we really mean, is that we're fixing the game by adding more bugs!

With this latest update, the game is truly in an unplayable state.

But hey, at least the battlepass with Tekken 7 items made it in just fine!

Yay.

April 9th 2024 UPDATE (FIX THIS ♥♥♥♥? NAH FAM, WE SENDING MODDERS DMCAS!)

Today marks the day that Bandai Namco is officially sending out cease and desist letters to the modding community.

After acknowledging that modders helped keep people playing Tekken 7 for the better part of 7 years, Bamco has now decided they value their battlepass and MTX shop over their community.

And they STILL have't rolled out a fix for their last disastrous patch either.

Their priorities are clear.

They don't care about your player experience at all.

Don't support this game.

April 20th 2024 UPDATE (THEY BROKE MATCHMAKING)

Matchmaking is now based on Tekken prowess, a system that no one understands.

No more learning multiple characters, unless you want 15 minutes queues.

HAVE FUN!

APRIL 30th - A New Hope? (May 8th Patch Notes Revealed)

They just dropped the patch notes for next week's patch....and they look really, really promising.

Bandai even admits the faults in the game that I outlined in the first post of this review.

Maybe there is some hope here after all.

Stay tuned.

July 31st -What a Drag.

Sergei Dragunov has now won 4 of the last 5 majors, and made up of half of the top 8 at EVO.

Bandai continues to ignore the fact that this man is ruining the meta.

Meanwhile, you bet your ass we got another rushed battle-pass, and more Tekken Shop items.

They'll never miss the opportunity to make a dollar!

This game continues to bleed players month over month, and I don't even think Heihachi's return can save them.

It's sad to see what has become of my favourite franchise.

October 10th - I'm Just Sad Now

You seriously couldn't include the stage as part of the season pass or ultimate or deluxe editions? Stages used to be included in Tekken 7 season passes.

Also, they added Nike Ads on every building in one of the stages, Urban Square.

Between the stage DLC, the ultimate bundles that offer nothing, the Tekken Shop, the low-effort Battle Pass, and the $500 Halloween prop glasses they're trying to push on us, this whole game is just trying to push one message on the player-base:

SHUT UP AND CONSUME.

Game-play direction is subjective (and let me tell you, I despise the game-play direction), but this greed is not.

Whether you like Tekken 8 or not, you can not, and will not be able to deny that this game has just become a shake down for your money.

I honestly can't believe it.

Horrid connection for some of the matches thanks to a lack of a wifi indicatior, and also where the hell is the frame data?

Going to try to learn this game still. There's some fun here for sure, and when you get a good connection, it's astoundingly good. Buy it on sale.

It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Streets of Rage. I could leave it at that, and you'd know all you'd need to know.

It's a dream to play, and even better to look at and listen to. Buy this game. BUY THIS GAME.

GRAND UPPAH!

The Greatest 3D Fighting Game of All Time

It's a pretty bold claim when classics like Soul Cailbur 1 and 2, as well as Tekken 3 ,5 DR, and DOA 2 are all legendary titles. But Tekken 7 is one of the few modern games that actually pushes the needle forward. With a simplified combo system compared to the overly complicated Tekken Tag Tournament 2, the Tekken series is easier to get into, now more than ever.

That being said, if you want to play at a high level, then here's a warning. It is still a complicated fighter; perhaps the most complicated on the market. With a lack of tutorial, it is super easy to get frustrated and quit if you've never played before; and there are tons of legacy players just waiting to give people a whooping for pressing too many buttons. Even things like effective back-dashing are hidden behind execution barriers.

But if you try to understand the game's underlying mechanics, what you'll get back is one of the most satisfying experiences you could ever ask for in gaming. The elation of seeing your own growth and development as a player on a day to day basis is something very few games have ever acheived. Tekken 7 delivers that in spades. There's a reason why this is the only game at EVO that grows every year. There's no game out there quite like it.

Just a heads up: if you play fighting games for the story, Tekken 7 will NOT deliver. Not to say the story is bad per say; it certainly has its moments. But it's bogged down by a confusingly bad narrator, and relies more on flash than substance to keep players going through the campaign.

SEASON 4 UPDATE

The game has changed a lot since my initial review. Season 3 was a disaster, but Season 4 has put the game back on the right track.

The new Kunimitsu added to the game has been the most fun iteration of the character to date. I highly recommend trying the character out if you have any interest. She's unique amongst the cast in a gameplay perspective, while not being game breaking.

There remain some questions as to the future direction of the Tekken series, considering that there have been some baffling decisions in the past 12 months (Leroy, Fahkumram, wall carry increases), but as currently constructed, Tekken 7 Season 4 remains the best fighter on the market, and its overall balance is now better than ever.

I MISS THIS GAME
