Quite honestly? Genuinely overrated.
They say that short experiences are best, but this just leaves this VN, in my opinion, shallow and lacking in depth.
Unfortunately for DDLC, it banks too much on the "self aware" and "Psychological Horror" aspect, which, if you take that away, youre left with cardboard cutouts of characters.

Am I biased due to my experiences with longer Visual Novels? Sure, but that doesnt take away from the fact that due to the fact that it is as short as it is, it just isnt very good.

This isnt to say that small studios are bad at making Visual Novels, of course not. One must remember that, for example, Type Moon, when they released the original Tsukihime in the year 2000 were not even a proper company, yet it is regarded as one of the finest Visual Novels ever made (yes it has aged quite a bit, its a product of its time after all)

But I dont want to make a review where I lambast a VN for daring to exist, the Music is pretty alright, not exactly my style, but it isnt bad, the Visuals are good though, and I apologize for making kind of the same point again, the character designs are not exactly my style.
The story, again, is the only point where it falls flat in my opinion (The one area a VN shouldnt fall flat in) but I already brought that point across before.

In summary, if you already read a few Visual Novels before, DDLC probably isnt for you.

Before i bought this game i just knew that Hotline Miami existed, but not alot about the game itself. I saw that the game was on sale and thought: i didnt hear much about Hotline Miami, but i only heard good things, bought it finished it in one session and I love it. I immidiately bought the second game after finishing this. I absolutely recommend this game to anyone, i dont remember the original pricetag but it was like 2 euros on sale and those 2 euro were worth it.

First played it on my PS2 and had Vague memories of it, found it again got stuck at the same mission but i had/have fun however unless youre nostalgic you might wanna wait for a sale mainly because the controls are somewhat clunky but manageable

The current reviewbombing of the game is a total overreaction and completely unnecessary. It all resulted from a community misunderstanding about a economy change to the game to a more "activity" based one which discourages players from abandoning a match after 1 death.

Aside from that, the game is an amazing blend of arcade controls and realism for a vehicle based combat game. If this is what you are into, I can and will highly recommend it.
