I hadn't played this game in probably about 8 or 9 years. But due to the current lockdown situation I have a lot more time for gaming, and have fond memories of this game, so thought I'd boot it back up.

Having now completed the game again, it's clear that the nostalgia goggles were on when I reminisced about this game, but it is still pretty solid.

In fairness, I played this game entirely with a controller. I have no idea how it handles with kb&m and I don't intend to find out. I originally played this game on Xbox 360, and used a Dualshock 4 for the PC replaying. And there was the first issue. Apparently all the button prompts programmed into the game are xbox button prompts as it would only give me ABXY button controls, but that's fine because I know where the buttons are on the corresponding controller.

Graphics wise: Let's be honest, no one is playing this game for graphics. But I genuinely do find the cartoon element quite nice looking, and it's good enough you can definitely tell who all the cameos are!

Soundtrack: I love the soundtrack for this game. But then again, that's because it's the kind of music I listened to as a teen. If you love metal then you will love this soundtrack. This game was built around having a kick-ass soundtrack and it definitely delivers!

Story: Fairly standard man comes to new universe and saves the day story line.

Writing: This is extremely subjective. But a good rule of thumb I've found with this game is ask yourself, "Do I find Jack Black/Tenacious D funny?" If not: Stay away. There's simply no point playing. However, if that is your style of humour then this game is absolutely hilarious and regularly had me laughing out loud.

Gameplay: This is a gripe I have always had with this game. The first third or so of the game is an excellent hack'n'slash style adventure. Other than the button prompts mentioned earlier, the gameplay feels smooth and natural. I wouldn't find myself thinking what button is what, the buttons I expected to do things worked. The enemies were fun to fight and driving around in the Deuce is enjoyable even if the car feels a little heavy. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere the entire gameplay changes. It basically becomes an RTS. Now I LOVE RTS games, but this isn't the best designed RTS ever. I do like that it still drops into Hack'n'slash but those elements of the game just feel so much more natural. The RTS battle part (which takes over the majority of the latter 2/3s of the game) feels a bit clunky and stuck on. It's not BAD, it's just nowhere near as fun as the H'n'S part in my opinion.

Overall it's a great game and I am gladd I replayed it. I just wish the Hack'n'Slash had been the bigger chunk of gameplay. But it was a kick-ass game, with a lot of laughs and some great music!

It's like the ultimate game of the floor is lave.

I love this game so much, with fun challenges and great replayability. With enough levels so you never get bored. Every fail you know is your own fault, and not due to the mechanics. It's smooth and silky, but punishes you for being slightly wrong. Everyone should play this game!

Honestly, it's an absolutely incredible game with hours of fun. I know reading the description, it doesn't SOUND all that good, but once you get into it, it really REALLY is. I would recommend playing the demo first (as far as I remember, there's nothing you can't do in the demo that you can in the main game) just to ensure you like the feel of the game.

Looks absolutely stunning, and runs in ultra even on my crappy laptop, so it wont hog all your resources. Plays beautifully. Just be prepared to crash into a lot of walls/cars!! ;)
