Reboots of a beloved franchise are a tricky thing. You have beloved characters or universes that you're starting from scratch with, sometimes it works, a lot of the time, it doesn't. Thankfully Crystal Dynamics really nailed it with this Tomb Raider reboot.

This isn't the same Lara from previous games that was basically unphased by anything that was thrown her way. Rather, in this game she's a scared, innocent girl who is thrown into the heart of hell and forced to survive. It makes for an incredibly compelling story to watch Lara grow from the scared girl to the confident survivor she becomes.

The storytelling is done in an incredibly cinematic fashion, with some big, over the top action sequences thrown in with the usual story progression. There are moments though during these that you kinda feel like you're just along for the ride and you have very little control over what actually does happen. And while Lara's character is masterfully crafted, most of the secondary characters feel a bit flat, though finding the various collectibles do help to flesh them out.

All this being said, I highly recommend this game to anyone. It's a great experience from start to finish and I can't wait to see where the franchise goes next, something I haven't really felt with Tomb Raider games before.
