Ok but for real - I adore this game, it has sci fi, a story that just present enough in the base-game to be coherent but not enough that it cramps you making your own alongside your soldiers. Like Skyrim that way.
However, there's some things you gotta know:

THIS GAME IS HELD TOGETHER WITH STICKYTAPE AND PRAYER
This is a double edged sword as it means the modding scene is incredible & can do almost anything (seriously the mods are like an expansion on their own) but it means that even without mods. The game runs like a Cat... you heard me... a housecat. Sometimes it loves you, sometimes it randomly breaks, sometimes it hisses, no rhyme or reason but you love it anyway.

The one thing for certain? The game runs like butts no matter your hardware on high settings. Thankfully it's a top-down strat so you don't NEED very high settings. Play it with War Of The Chosen Expansion and it runs a HECK of a lot better, plus most mods require it if you aren't in that one very specific "Long War" mod-niche. Speaking of which...

THE MODDING SCENE IS ALIVE & WELL
You'll see a lot of reviews coming in around now that "2K broke the mod scene with their new launcher".
Ok I'll be straight with you, if you were using the game's launcher and modding, you were already doing it wrong. The Modding Reddit (r/xcom2mods) hasn't gone anywhere, and their AML (Alternative Mod Loader) is what you need.
1) 2K's updates haven't / can't break it. 2) better debug control and smoother launching. 3) Mod Load Order is Very important, as anyone who dabbles in modding knows.
It's easy as hell, just grab that if you're going to mod this game and you're gold.

Base Game can be the adventures of The Resistance & maybe the odd top-hatted dude and that's great by itself.
Modded, this game can be Endgame levels of crossover; Sci-Fantasy Dress Up Sim; Mass Effect: Tactics, the list goes on.

Get the full shebang with all the DLCs in a sale sometime and have a play.
