One of the laziest ports I have ever seen....
Not only does this game not work with the keyboard mouse (which is clearly labeled, but is still a example of a TERRIBLE PC port).

But it doesn't even work with either of my gamepads...

I have both a wireless xbox 360 and wireless xbox one controller and NEITHER work with this game. This is 100% a game issue, because both of these controllers work 100% with any other game and the steam big picture interface.

To be clear, I cannot even select new game on the title screen, because of this issue.

If you use xbox 360 or xbox one wireless controllers, think twice about making this purchase.

This game has NO BUSINESS being as good as it is...

This games takes Autochess norms like various class synergies and interest and combines it with a rather addictive, very fun to play game of "snake."

Can't say enough about this game, for $3.00 everyone should buy it.

Early Access Review
This is easily one of the best rogue-likes (technically rogue-lite) released since dead cells.
The controls are smooth and responsive, there appear to be quite a few weapon options.
There is a TON of (permanent) progression options as you continue to play.
I have resources that I don't have any idea how to use at this point, i assume I have to unlock something before I can use them.

I don't have enough compliments about this game, it is absolutely outstanding.

If you like bastion or transistor, buy it!

If you are wishing Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi would return to the "good old days," then you should purchase this game RIGHT NOW.

This is everything a paper mario spiritual successor should be.

The game is very 30 hours if you rush, it took me roughly 50 hours to complete everything in the game. So PLENTY of content.

There are NUMEROUS badges for customization options. Honestly, this is one of the best purchases I have picked up on a whim on steam in a very long time.

Bottom line, if you like the classic Paper Mario games, get this!

First:
People need to stop comparing this to a soulslike game, this is NOTHING like souls. It's not extremely difficult and the only similarity it has with soulslike games is the healing incense (which functions similar to estus flask).

This game is great fun, combat is smooth and the game is about middling difficulty. The perfect boss rewards give you something to shoot for and extend the length of the game for that reason alone.

Very very little RPG elements, leveling barely makes a difference and doesn't feel important.

In 8 hours I got 100% of everything in the game and flawlessly killed every single boss. So while this is an excellent game, it is EXTREMELY short.

Bottom line, if you have money to spare and want a metroidvania style somewhat difficult hack/slash game then go for it. But don't expect to get more then 10 hours out of this game (tops).

I do recommend it, but I think $20.00 is too much because it is so damn short.

I love this game, but for it's price point it's just not worthwhile right now. I see great framework for a eventually excellent game, but it's just not there yet..

I'm giving it a thumbs up because there is a good CORE here and the devs seem very responsive at this time, it just needs a lot of polish. The devs have stated that they will never put micro-transactions in the game.

Loot/Progression/Class Balance:

Loot:
Gear is varied and interesting and drops from both enemies (usually "champions" or greater) and at the end of a mission as a reward chest. However gear is hampered by the fact that all gear has a "power level." Your power level in regards to the missions "recommend power level" results in a blanket buff. If your power level is significantly lower then the mission you get a blanket debuff, at +400 power level you are something like 100% less damage to enemies and take 350% more damage from enemies. This makes trying to customize your build through gear basically impossible until closer to end game because power level trumps EVERYTHING else... Who cares if that power level 50 staff gives you exactly the stats you want, you are going to replace it with a power level 70 staff that is crap for no good reason other than to increase your power level.

Progression:
This is my BIGGEST point of contention right now. Progression is terrible in this game, in random missions you get 1 exp per enemy you kill (doesn't matter what enemy) and all the rest of your exp comes from successfully completing a mission. In Tarot and Story missions (the only missions that matter) it is more efficient to RACE TO THE OBJECTIVE ignoring as many guys as you can, than it is to blow them away. This goes against everything ARPGS have ever done and it is NOT a change for the better.
Side note, you are looking at a minimum of 40 hours to get a max level character if you are doing EVERYTHING PERFECTLY and know exactly what you are doing, realistically it's going to be closer to 70 hours if I am being completely honest.

Class Balance:
There is no class balance, Psyker >>>>>>>>>>>> Assassin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Crusader.
Psyker's can take down enemies faster then any other class and by a HUGE margin
Assassin's can come somewhat close, but they still don't compete with the speed of a Psyker.
Crusader's are incredibly slow and incredibly inefficient, they are by far the worst class right now.

Gameplay/Skill System:

Gameplay
First, the gameplay is FAR slower than other ARPGS, do not go into this game expecting to blow away thousands of guys in seconds (unless of course you are a Psyker). Movement is slow, combat is slow, enemies have lots of hp compared to other rpgs, basically everything about gameplay is slowed down a notch. This isn't necessarily bad, but it should be noted.

The other thing to note, is your equipped gear/skills/perks cannot be changed DURING a mission, you have to beat the mission first before you can change ANYTHING on your character.

Skill/Perk System
Right now the Psyker is the only class that has unique skills and they are also customizable, he is basically a mage and as such has access to a pretty cool customization system for his "spells." He can effectively put up to 3 different mods on each of his spells that range from bigger aoe, to adding a DOT, to armor piercing, etc...

Rather then what you would expect, all skills (except psyker to a lesser extent) are based on the equipped weapons. One handed weapon have 2 such skills and 2-handed weapons generally have 4 skills.

Your actual skill points tend to go to passives in about 20 different skill trees, but the passives have unique effects like "heal 1% of health every time you crit" or "all heat attacks add burn DOT" so there is a LOT of customization options with these passives. In fact your entire build will be building your passive skills around your weapon skills (unless Psyker).

Finally you have 3 interchangeable perks which will compliment your skill build, you earn those perks by working towards in game achievements and they can be swapped before each mission.

Various Bugs QOL issues
This game has quite a few significant bugs at this time as well.
  • On launch there was a game breaking bug regarding story missions that prevented progression (this has now been fixed)
  • The chat system doesn't seem to work
  • I have heard NUMEROUS complains about performance issues with this game (even on high end pcs), though i personally haven't experienced them.

Final Verdict
Right now, the cost of the game just isn't worth it. The core system in place is solid, but there is a LONG WAYS to go before I would call this game "great."

If you are a hardcore fan of warhammer 40,000 and absolutely want an ARPG i would recommend this.
If you are DESPERATE for a new ARPG i would recommend this
If you are willing to stick with a subpar game and experience growing pains while it continues to get better (which I wholeheartedly believe it will) then I recommend this.

If you want a solid well polished ARPG right out of the box, stay away.

This is closer to the classic fallout games (1+2) then Fallout 3+4 ever were.

The humor is great, the combat is fun, the stat system and perks are awesome.
Seriously if you ever played KoL browser game or Fallout 1+2 and enjoyed them, you will LOVE this game.

This game is so amazing, it's easily one of the best games I have played in a LONG time.
Truly enjoyable in atmosphere, storyline, graphics, everything.

It is a difficult metroidvania and it is wonderful.

This is one of my top 5 RPG's of all time.

The battle system is unique, it has all the good jrp goodness. The story is AMAZING and huge in scope.

I cannot say enough good things about this game, it is one of the best RPG's I have ever played.
