This game is quite solid as of right now. No major bugs or glitches, everything works fine and you can do some pretty cool stuff. However, there are a few difficulties that are not being adressed right now, and which are usually causing this type of game to die off pretty rapidly. This game is still in development, but unless this is the game you have been waiting 30 years for, there isn't much to do yet. (16.02.2022). You can technically play about a thousand dungeons, but there is no reason to do so, other than having fun doing it.

As for things that I think should be added at some point:

Regarding the editor:

  • - tooltips for objects, monsters and everything you can place. If you wanna have a good shot at building nice dungeons
right from the get go, then it's quite hard to figure out if things do something special or not. The sandbox editor tutorial is neatly designed, but takes up quite a bit of time and is not my preferred way of learning about the editor. So I would love to have simple short tooltips for objects in the editor menu.
  • - Being able to move entire rooms in the editor. It's quite tedious to replace everything when you did a smaller mistake in alignment of the doors that switch the floor and you end up needing to replace a good chunk of the level, or have an ugly door placement.
  • - Trigger. For everything. I would love to have area trigger for some scripted encounters. Spiders falling down from the ceiling, a chest becoming visible after solving a puzzle, or a wall breaking in when you hit a switch. These elements of surprise are missing.
  • - Being able to rotate assets. I'd love to have things sidewards.
  • - Cutscenes! Maybe. Those would need to come with a dialogue system. That would be pretty cool. Would be a stronger RPG and story-telling experience. Along with this, signs that you can read, doods you can talk to, stuff like that.
  • - I want to delete the entrance and the goal to be able to place them myself when I see fit. I don't want to awkwardly move those around when I'm done with the rest of the dungeon. Just stop me from saving, or give me a warning that the level is not playable like that, when I happen to erase it and don't place a new one.
  • - Bosses. There are bosses in the game, you just can't seem to be able to place them in the editor yet. For this I would suggest to be able to have a boss version of every normal monster in the game, so you can technically run into a lot of different bosses, without the player needing to learn too many new mechanics.
  • - And then very easy and lazy suggestion: More of everything. More objects, more decorations, more monsters, more environment sets. More more more. And maybe enemies that are specific to a tileset. Castle dungeons could get skeletons and knights. You might be able to tie that together with bosses.

Regarding the game itself:

  • - Challenge runs. Of any sort. Speed runs? All collectibles? Killing every enemy? All of that combined with completion time? That makes dungeons 20 times more fun to run. Or master. That makes even "bad" dungeons fun to play, because you are starting to search for faster exploits of the flawed design, haha.
  • - Dailies. Yes, daily quests are usually psychologically engineering you to log on every day and make a habit out of playing the game, but that would give you a reason to boot up the game every now and then, and run a couple random dungeons. If you choose to implement this, make sure that at least half of those are brand new fresh dungeons, so those get some plays too.
  • -Generally speaking, reasons to play the game. Award me with badges, profile icons, statistics, all of that. There is no "reason" to play the game as of right now. Or more specifically, to play the dungeons of other people, other than for the sake of it. Or for the fun, if you dare to potentially play a bad one.
  • - Show me what floor I am on, while I play a dungeon. Some of them are quite confusing. Or if that's too much information, add an item that shows me what floor I am on. Same with a map item. I would like to have both of them. Maybe even a compass that shows treasures, like in the zelda games.
  • -Let me roll permanently with the feather item, when I hold shift. Would not like to be bothered by windows for pressing shift too often.
  • -Let us tag levels, and let the creator tag his own level, so people know what the level is about and what it is intended to be. And how people in return interprete it. I usually don't want to play too long levels, but there is no way of knowing how long a dungeon is gonna be.
  • -Track statistics of people who play dungeons. How many of the players complete it, how many deaths, how many enemies defeated, objects collected, stuff like that. Those could tie into automatic tagging as well. If you track the death source to traps or enemies, you could tag them as "difficult battles" or "platforming" or "dangerous", depending on the source.

I hope this is a good source of inspiration for the months to come. I am sure you have thought about a lot of these yourself already, but there you have some input of someone who likes to play games like these a lot.

The average completion time for this game is about 2,5h. It's very short. It personally took me 3,2h.
Is it a good game? Well. It's way too short. I feel like the game just ended when things got interesting and I was playing an intro to the "gameplay" mechanics. When there should have been meaningful decisions regarding the cool mechanics of this game, the game was done already.

This "game" has many cool features, but technically no content. I am very sure the developers see that wildly different, because this was probably a wide stretch and very time consuming to create, but if I had paid 13€ for this, I would have felt robbed.

Even within the 3h I played, some of the content looked like it was just cut at some point. Like the writing was describing a certain feeling and how stuff was turning out to be and then it's telling you "day was over / next scene / stuff was eventually solved".

I think this is a cool game. But it looks rushed. And if you're fine with just 2.5h of reading, it's definitly a cool experience. I wouldn't recommend it though.

Who enjoys this game?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
You either need to want to have more details and background information about the world of "Amnesia" - or you need to be fairly new to the horror genre, to be truly able to "enjoy" this game as much as you can enjoy a horror and fear experience - because it's very slow and mostly atmospheric. Veterans of the genre and without any background knowledge will probably not enjoy this game at all.

Is this game scary?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Yes. But it's primarily of atmospheric nature and you need to immerse yourself in the story that is primarily delivered through flash backs and notes. If you don't want to read or care for story at all, this is not a game for you. This game is barely scary for either genre veterans or people who can't immerse themselves in the world that is presented.

Is it hard?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Not really. There are a few tough situations, but it's generally fairly easy.

Is this "The Dark Descent 2"?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
No. This is its own game with its own story and it focuses on different aspects. If you expect this game to be essentially the same as TDD, then you're in for a disappointment. It's a great game, but not comparing it with its predecessor will do you good.

One Hour Review
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

What kind of player likes this game?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This is a very calm and relaxed game. In and of itself, it can be compared quite well with a tower defense game, since you set up a central base and try to defend it with new defensive buildings and soldiers as you expand. Buildings are built with gold, which you receive from your workers and passively every day from the base. The game only has a permanent death mode.

I would personally recommend this game to people who basically like to play tower defense games and are looking for a game for in between. It plays way too slowly to be actively played for a long period of time.

What is it about?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The game doesn't really tell you how the circumstances came about that your character is in. You are a king or queen and you don't seem to have any land. Maybe you have been driven from your homeland or have lost your old country to the monsters that roam about at night. This game seems to be about founding a new kingdom and defending it from monsters. As the monsters get more and stronger after each night, it could be difficult to balance defending the camp and developing more passive gold income at the same time.

What does it promise to be?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This title promises to be a 2d sidescrolling strategy and resource management game. With a minimalistic touch and beautiful pixel art. You should be able to take control of a king on horseback who looks after his subjects and his kingdom in a procedurally generated world. In addition, you should be able to explore mysterious forests in order to find puzzling and strange artifacts that you can use for the kingdom.

What does it deliver in this time span?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Later in the game, correctly spending coins at the right time is sure to make a lot of difference, as compulsive permanent death has been added to the game. If you lose your crown, you start over. That doesn't sound so bad in theory, but the "procedurally generated worlds" look extremely similar and there are not many variations. Still, I don't think this is a strategy or resource management game. Basically this is only about base defense and therefore comes closer to a sidescrolling tower defense for me. You don't really care about a kingdom - you fix it and throw coins at random farmers, who then stock up on equipment we previously bought. The defending soldiers are not flexible and do not change sides if one of the flanks is put under greater pressure at night. Learning to do this directly in a crisis situation is a bit frustrating. Especially with the permanent death mode. Since this game is played so slowly, it is just worse to be pressured by something like that. During the lesson that I played there are a few camps near the start region where you can recruit new farmers. I also found strange ruins that I could have interacted with. I only played an hour, but I haven't been knocked off my feet here. In fact, the fake 3d look and the pixel art are very nice. I particularly liked the weather and fog effects. The water at the bottom of the screen is a great idea and adds some depth to the picture.

Do you recommend this?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I can't say I would recommend this game to anyone I know. Even as a relaxed game, I still find it too uninteresting to really make a recommendation. It looks very nice, is often available for free and certainly a nice idea, but it is too slow to be actively played and probably too frustrating later if you are not using your head. So for me the game speed is set incorrectly. But if you don't have a problem with nothing to do for a while, especially in the earlier phases of the game, then you should definitely give it a try. Personally, I would like to say that this game should not be bought at full price.

What makes this game so appealing is the fact that you can customize your experience quite a lot. You can create your own characters if you're somewhat aristically gifted (or are fine using the stock characters art / stuff from the workshop) and assign them custom spells and custom equipment. I was always a fan of summoning and transformation mechanics, and these are allowed too.

How powerful pretty much anything in the game is, is dependent on the requirements and conditions the spell needs to fulfil. For an example, you can limit its use to once per battle and increase its cost, to make a powerful "ultimate" ability.
Other than that, the game automatically balances everything out. Even your opponents. It is worth to mention that you can fully animate your custom spells as well, if you wish so. The balancing system kinda makes sure that there are no atrocious user-generated dungeons to explore

What makes this game a rogue-lite is the fact that you collect gold after each run, even if you failed, and that gold can be transfered into randomized trinkets. You can combine them to make them more powerful. These apply buffs to your entire party - and yet again you can choose which trinkets you will use. (up to five). So this is your progression system.

The actual game plays itself similar to classic tabletop RPGs. You have a story that you play through, with quite a bit of dialogue and battles in between. Also checks for statistics on challenges. You have quite a bunch of characters to choose from and the game emphasizes using different ones each time. You don't necessarily have to, but adapting to upcoming challenges makes the game significantly easier and engaging. A downside to this is, that currently there is no real way to accurately get a representation of what all the different stats in the game do right from the get go. There is a user generated wiki page being built as you read this though. Most important details are already there. Party sizes are almost always of your own choice. One to five. Your enemies are up/down scaled accordingly.

Custom campaign creation is pretty easy and straight forward. Only real downside to this is, at least in my opinion, that you can't create specific customized levels, or battlegrounds so to speak. Your encounters are essentially always happening in a "random place". You can customize what the game will generate for your encounter, but after all, it is still generated. Devs said they are thinking about implementing the possibility to do that, but as of right now, no promises made. (It is still working very fine, I just would like to make it custom and static :P)

The developers said they would at least like to implement the possibility for community translations of the game, if you would like to share this game with non-english-speaking people. As of right now, switching languages is not possible though.

If you don't understand anything that is thrown at you in this game, please consider joining the developers discord server. They are just 3 people but doing an incredible job at making sure you are having a good experience. They are currently taking non-stop feedback and bug reports.

Community is garbage of the highest order most of the time so I'd advise you to play with organised groups of people. Of course not everyone is a ♥♥♥♥ in public multiplayer, but quite a lot of people are. Learning this game is also quite the task. It has a pretty huge modding community which I am part of myself.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy this game alone, with selected friends, has a LOT of time to learn it and somewhat enjoys modding it. You also need to want a big hole in your wallet at this point.

Cheers.

EDIT: I have recently discovered, that paradox decided to have a subscription model for DLCs which I am not ok with. Integrate them in the basegame and then keep selling it on full price. The base game is not worth 50 bucks. I do not recommend getting this game at this point.

I've got it 2012 for 10€... Yeah, I'd like a hug right now. :'(

Oh? My hours played? Yea. my steam bugged all the day, and back in 2012 the game didn't wanted to be closed. I mean, steam thought the game was open and counted the hours.

If you ever wanted to buy this game, do not. Spend that 1,00 for whatever you like. Some candys whatever. Get something food or water for it, idc, BUT, do something usefull with it.

You can thank me later. Cya

This game is just realy realy funny. You can spend alot of hours at playing this game. And the best thing about playing it, you can do it whenever you want. You just start the game, play an adventure and quit again, if you feel so. On the other side, you can play it for a looong time if you want so. Adventures are finished very quickly and everytime afterwards you can look at your new cool stuff and change equipment. The restloot isn't useless at all, you can put that into a lootshrine and transform multiple scrap parts into a much better weapon or an armor.

And if you've got what you want or feel like you're pretty experienced now, you can start creating your own maps. You can do a whole campaign with up to 5 Levels or just create a single adventure. You can do alot of cool stuff with this editor and it isn't that hard to use, even if it looks like. There's a leaderboard for creators of adventures, so if you want, you can try to be the best adventure developer out there haha.

So afterall I could recommend this to everyone, to people who doesn't have too much time and to those who have. To fans of editors etc. Go ahead and buy it, it's worth it!
