Name: Lebachacanthus (There are 3 species, L. senckenbergianus, L. colloseus and L. pollichiae)

Name's meaning: "Lebachacanthus" means "spine from Lebach", referring to the German town with the same name, located near the place where it was discovered.

Classification: Diplodoselachidae (Family of shark-like fishes that lived from the Carboniferous to the Permian).

Date of description: 1889 for L. senckenbergianus and 2007 for L. colloseus and L. pollichiae.

Distribution: Meisenheim Formation, Germany.

Temporal range: Late Carboniferous to Early Permian (300-290 million years ago).

Size: A length of 3-3.5 meters (9.8-11.4 ft), the weight is unknown.

Additional information: This animal is believed to have lived both in marine and fresh waters, hunting and consuming a large variety of animals, such as other fish, cephalopods, and even smaller, or larval temnospondyls. Despite looking like a shark, Lebachacanthus wasn't one, it actually was a xenacanthid, a extinct order of cartilaginous fishes that lived from the Carboniferous to the Late Triassic.
