First and foremost, I hate cover shooters. What an awful genre as a whole.

That being said, the story was compelling enough to make up for it being a cover shooter.

When I started it was one of the best FPS I have ever played. The HRV mechanic encourages agressive play with minimal "camping" of spots and customization is unbelievable. Some of my source-engine-or-die friends have said that it "feels strange, but I attribute that to their refusal to broaden their horizons as much as anything. The weapon balancing leaves a bit to be desired - some receivers are just plain better than others. Fortunately for new players, the hands down, universally agreed upon best weapon in the game (well, except for that one that glissa dude) is the basic assault rifle, which every player starts out with. From there, the other receivers are just specializations to suit a particular preferred playstyle.

Regarding whether it's p2w or not, it certainly is not pay to win. It takes a while to earn the gp to unlock things permanently, but not nearly so long in this game as it does in games like planetside 2 et. al, and everything in the base game can be unlocked/accessed without needing to pay any real dollars. At the curent time, I would not recommend paying any sort of real money into the game because its future is up in the air, but to each his own.

As of recently, the long awaited parity patch has finally come, but I am one of those who is severly disappointed with it. The new UI is pretty crappy and a pain to navigate. Nearly all recoil from any gun is nonexistent, and as such the meta is essentially to get the highest firerate gun and build for max accuracy and just zerg everything from just about any distance. Really, the guns feel like crap. I find it hard to play the game for any real length of time before I feel the need to go back to other games to wait it out until things get fixed. It's actually that bad.

TL;DR BLR is a no-recoil zergfest with tanks that can run faster than you, a non-functioning server browser, bad UI, and an overall goofy feel to it. I can no longer recommend that people play this game until it sees some serious help.
