After completing this game, I have to say that I very much liked this game.

While its a retro based game that revolves around the style of the CD-i Zelda games, the game is very well made. The animation style of the cutscenes, while intentionally being bad in the animation department to mimic that style alot of us are used to in this day and age thanks to youtube poops, were also good in telling what the story is about. Which is Daimur (Ganon expy) is sealed inside a book (sounds familiar?) 10 years ago with his compatriot Duke Nodelki (Duke Onkled expy) being sentenced to scrub all the floors in Faramore. But after 10 years, Nodelki somehow got the book and released Daimur. So its up to Princess Arzette to collect the shards of the jewel to stop Daimur once again.

If my expy drops are to go by, this game is technically a loose sequel to Zelda Wand of Gamelon. Just with names and setting completely changed. But unlike that game, this game is far more well done. Enemy placement is far more fair but still challenging (they don't spawn endlessly like in WoG), there is mercy invincibility to help you get back on your feet (Arzette even has a hurt sprite), and the most mundane thing in the game, opening the menu, does not require you to crouch and hit the jump button. Arzette herself plays as you'd expect from a character in an action platformer. You run, jump, slash and do the duck walk (cool huh?!). And again, in comparison to WoG, she's not at all slugish or a pain to control. The controls are very smooth and responsive. I should mention i used a controller to play this, but i imagine it isn't hard to play either with a keyboard or the cd-i styled spoon controller. Talking to npcs still requires you to cut at them though. But much like WoG, Arzette brought her smart sword. So it won't hurt anyone friendly. As odd as this sounds, it kinda threw me off as at this point in time, i'm used to just hitting up to talk to npcs in action platformers. You also get upgrades. Akin to actual Zelda games and Metroidvanias. Perhaps a downside I have with this game is bosses are too easy. While I know the bosses in Wand of Gamelon weren't that tough either (they all die in one hit), the bosses here could've been more challenging. Especially later bosses where Arzette is extremely op (at least assuming you got the upgrades). Given, they're not pushovers either as they do put up a bit of a good fight so you can't just mindlessly run up to them and cut them until they die.

The map, while being a bit reminicent to Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil, feels more in line with Wanderers of Ys and Order of Eclessia. Ala you pick via a map icon and proceed by hitting whatever button you have for confirm. And much like those games, Arzette has a town hub where you can restock on items and speak to npcs. The town itself is pretty big for a CD-i tribute game. As are the levels. Many of the level designs are pretty big and are akin to those seen in metroidvanias. They're neither unfair or braindead easy. While there are a couple instadeath pits, you can easily avoid them by paying attention to the terrain. And the enemy placement, as I said, are not unfair compared to the games its a tribute of. And they don't endlessly respawn so you have some breathing room once you kill them.

Overall, the game is a fun tribute to the CD-i Zeldas, but obviously doing something way better than them. Gameplay is great and some of the cooky characters are charming and amusing. With many of them being expies on several CD-i characters you might be familiar with. But the game can range from being manageable to a little too easy. I should mention that a certain streamer does have a voicing role in this. I ain't spoiling what character he is, but you might recognize him once you get to him.

tl;dr, great game. fun characters and animation. but could be a little challenging (i'm aware of a mode unlocking, but i'll keep my review spoiler free so i'm not mentioning it besides what i just said). Would recommended to those that like metroidvanias, action platformers, and/or youtube poops. If you're for some reason expecting this to play like the actual zelda CD-i games (i hope you're not), then you'll be disappointed with how much better this one plays.

Some slight spoilers:

After completing my first playthrough of this game (did an ultimate good playthrough), i can safely recommend this game to anyone who like games like Castlevania II Simon's Quest, Zelda II, Faxanadu, and any other side scrolling adventure game that falls under the same type of gameplay.

Although the game isn't too hard if you're a seasoned platforming gamer, the game does have a couple hard platforming segments that might irritate you at first. Or just irritate you completely if you die on the same room. The way you level up is almost exactly the same as zelda II. Where you kill enemies to get exp and then choose which stat to upgrade. Though only on save points. Even the spells might be familiar to those who have played and mastered zelda II.

One major difference between the games its similar too though is a karma system. Where depending on the type of quests you complete and actions you take will determing both your ending and alignment. For example, deciding to kill a ruffian instead of taking his bribe is considered good. While drinking with some vagabonds is apparently evil (you'll see why when you try it). One other interesting tidbit is doing enough evil deeds will change your appearance and choice of weapon.

If there is one thing i have to say about this game in terms of cons is some of the rooms in some dungeons. Eapecially dungeon 4 which for some reason has way more instadeath traps than dungeon 5. As i stated before, the game has some difficult segments. But some of them are just brutal. Just hope by the time you get to these parts of the game that you're actually ready. Otherwise expect to lose all your lives and restart back to a savepoint.

Overall, the game is pretty solid. I like the ye olde game feel the game has and the cryptic moments, and the challenge is right up my ally. Its a pretty cool metroidvania game with quite alot of gore. As said, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes these kind of games and can stomach some pixelated gore (and boobs).
