You may have asked yourself at some point in your life; what would happen if society as we know it crumbled overnight and left us with nought but sticks and stones?

Well, wonder no longer as Rust is the definitive answer to this question. The answer is a world where people will sit outside your doorstep with a double barrelled shotgun for hours at a time, waiting for you to exit your humble abode for a small chance at whatever loot you may have on you when you meet your unexpected demise. A world where people will scream profanities about your maternal caregiver while they sit behind sixteen armour plated walls and an automated machine gun turret only to beg for forgiveness when you inevitably cross paths in the wild and have them bleeding out at your feet.

Frankly this game should be used by scientists as a large scale, in-depth social experiment.

It's either kill or be killed in Rust, and you learn this rather quickly as you log in to server after server as a naked getting sprayed by makeshift AK-47's from 300 metres for committing the sacrilegious act of showing yourself as a few pixels on the screen of your murderer.

Despite this, Rust has made me more friends than any other multiplayer game I have played to date. Perhaps because when you rely on someone in this game you do so without compromise, as they have the ability to screw you over at any moment. Or maybe it's because if you have less than 2,000 hours in this game the chances of you achieving anything whatsoever as a solo player are next to none.

Facepunch studios have created perhaps the most unwitting masterpiece I have had the pleasure of playing on this godforsaken platform. I have had more ups and downs on this game than I care to admit, and have returned every time despite what I have told all my friends when the base I put a week of sleepless nights into gets raided by a sixteen man zerg group with more explosives than the US military. The sheer heart pounding terror of seeing a flashlight in the pitch black night when you have a backpack full of scrap and weapons from a silent run of Launch Site is a level of emotion that is matched only by Escape from Tarkov.

The regular updates, the graphics, the community modded servers, the content creators, the gunplay, the crafting and countless other factors all combine to make this perhaps the standout game of the decade in my humble opinion.

The only downside to an otherwise impeccable experience is the community within the game itself however this is to be expected from any online video game that encourages competitive PvP combat while simultaneously providing complete anonymity. If this is a deal breaker for you, be prepared to mute proximity voice chat.

All in all - a game that deserves to go down in history and mentioned in the same breath as the likes of CSGO and World of Warcraft. If this game isn't in your library, it should be now.
