Guruvayur Kannan, a revered temple elephant at the Punnathur Kotta sanctuary in Kerala, passed away on January 27, 2024, at the age of 62. Kannan was notable for his exceptional role in temple festivities and was a nine-time winner of the elephant race held during the annual Guruvayur festival. Donated to the Guruvayur Temple in 1985, he became one of its most celebrated elephants.

Punnathur Kotta, where Kannan resided, is a unique sanctuary associated with the Guruvayur Temple, housing elephants that are offerings from devotees. The sanctuary, located on the grounds of a historic palace, emphasizes the care and preservation of its elephants, which are often part of religious processions and cultural events. With Kannan’s passing, the sanctuary now hosts 39 elephants
