I had the early access version for a solid few years before this was officially released, so I've had the absolute pleasure of watching this beautiful game grow and develop.
Hinterlands did an AMAZING job with the gameplay, keeping the same core mechanics that made the earliest versions fun, refining them, and building onto them without making the game feel overly complicated.
The stylistic art is lovely, the maps are well-made, and the music is wonderful.
I haven't actually played through the story-mode that they released, but I can say, without a doubt, that the base game is worth the $30. It was years ago when I first bought it, and now, polished and officially-released, it's MORE than worth it. I've been let down by other early-access games, but TLD has only gotten better and better.
Bottom line: if you like other survival and/or exploration-based games, this is worth the purchase.

Bought this while it was still in early access. My thoughts?
It was super fun when I got it waaayyy back for sub $30 on sale. Interesting mechanics, relatively fun community, and decent (not amazing) graphics.
Now?
It's incredibly player-unfriendly early game, to the extent that it feels incredibly tedious and outright painful at times. The server browser is frustrating, and the servers themselves tend to be toxic as hell. The game is ridiculously huge for how poor the quality of the game itself is. I went from playing this on a bad, cheap PC, to a decent laptop, to a high-end PC, and all three have dealt with lag spikes and FPS drops. There's a multitude of bugs that range from amusing to infuriating. Skyrim is more polished.
Honestly it's heartbreaking to see such a good concept crumble because of poor production, greed, and shoddy, overpriced DLC.
TL;DR: Buy Minecraft and mod dinosaurs into the game. It'll be more fun, more cost-efficient, and you won't have to deal with FPS drops or lag.
