I am a lover of cRPGs, and I sincerely wanted to enjoy this title, but I just couldn't. The narrative was uninteresting, the voice acting left a lot to be desired, the levelling was uninspired, and the combat.... man, the combat.

I have read so many reviews here that heavily praise this game's combat, but I don't see it. Every enemy seems to have some type of lockdown, be it stun, freezing, knock down etc. It's a war for lockdown abilities. Best hope all your characters have high initiative, otherwise you'll have to use up valuable action points from another character to recover their companion from an unavoidable stun - only for them to be stunned once again. Granted, it is fun to exploit the terrain to your advantage. Though you will find often that you either do not have the opportunity to do so, or it is to your detriment. Didn't see the unlabelled, near-invisible puddle beneath your fighter? Well, she's stunned now after you made Jahan cast that Blitz Bolt.

The combat log tells me nothing. No dice rolls, calculations, nothing. It's there because other cRPGs feature it, not for its intended purpose. Along with that, tooltips are useless. I understand this is a game that includes a manual for finding this type of info, but the trend of in-game tooltips was very much alive in 2014.

Classless system? Come on. You're rewarded for dumping skill points into the same skills so that you can access higher-tiered spells and abilities of that skill. It may as well be a class. Most other cRPGs offer multiclassing so I really do not see the difference, or what makes this system special.

Having combat, dialogue and crafting skills use the same points I think is an awful idea. You cannot talk your way out of every fight, nor can you craft your way out of every fight. You may as well sacrifice a companion to be your resident crafter or talker, and to never, ever fight. All other cRPGs avoid this, so why doesn't this one?

Dialogue trees are utterly misleading, bloated and uninteresting. Often an option will state a question, where in fact that is the dialogue where your character had apparently explained your entire quest adventure. There is also SO much useless dialogue. It's an interesting concept having two PCs and being able to roleplay each, but this ends up being very linear responses where a character MUST agree or disagree with whatever they are both discussing. Only for one of them to respond to the other without my input, normally in a prideful and rude way. That decision baffles me. This goes for Jahan as well, whose response to anything is cynical. I got so sick of his cynicism that I would skip the majority of his dialogue.

Do not even get me started on the rock, paper, scissors dialogue mechanic.

What I did enjoy was exploration, graphics, and some of the bosses. The music is great. But these factors are just not enough for me to justify my time in continuing to play this game. I have heard Original Sin 2 improves upon almost everything this game falls short on, so I will be checking it out in the future. But my God, if you want an enjoyable, challenging turn-based with AP cRPG that offers an intriguing storyline and setting, play Shadowrun, Underrail, Fallout, Wasteland... anything else.
