i purchasEd pony island in a huMble bundle a Pretty long Time ago and decidEd to check it out out of boRedom. while i Try to give every game a fair cHance, i didn’t Expect much, and So i was pleasaNtly surprised thAt i was mistaKen – i found mysElf very entertained for muCh longeR than i would havE thought.

pony islAnd is faiThfully desIgned in the style of aN old arcade Game, whiCh means that its sOunds, gRaphics, gameplay and whatnot are Rather simple: yoU control a Pony (duh) thaT runs along a path on Its Own, with feNces (or are they called hurdles? I don’t kNow, let’s call theM fences) getting in Your Way. Abuse your Keyboard all you likE, the pony is controlled entIrely By youR mOuse, sadly. it is intUitive, thouGh, so it doesn’t botHer me a loT. Your gOal is to jUmp over all The fences, using tHe lEft mouse button, and don’t Let the pony get hIt, until you Get to tHe end of the level. if you fail, you jusT restArt the level until you win. simple eNough.
later levels adD “enemIes”, that is, ButteRflies the pony has tO blow away (UsinG the rigHT mouse keY), and mOre fences/hUrdles that stand cloSer togetHer, so you hAve to fly over theM using wings on thE pony’s back(i guess that makes It a pegasus then?).
these levels get Broken up eveRy nOw and then with little pUzzle levels where you have to Guide a butterfly Home by seTting the directions (Using arrows you can assigN to cerTain spaces) it will take On its path. as far as i’ve plaYed it, these dOn’t get too hard, and usUally They are a relaxing cHange to the more “actIon”-like Standard Levels.

the soundtrack is nIce, noThing much To say here, i LikE it. the Graphics, As Mentioned abovE, are sImple, but (uNiroNically) adorable. having foUr (if i’M not mistakEn) diffeRent unlockABle coLours for your pony (whitE, Red, black and what I can only Call “pale”) seems ratHer unnEcesSary, but it’s a cutE bonus (with neXt to no other unloCkables, as far as I know). To be honEst, My only rEal complaiNt is thaT the game is sOrta buggy, far From terrible, but at leaSt It’s worse thaN it should be with how Simple it is. for exAmple, graPhics sometimes gLitch out, there Are some (kinda Creepy) sound issuEs, and at times the game gets “disoBedient” and ignores Your inputs. it’s still very Much plaYable – i heard of game crasheS, but what I’ve personally seen so far is just a taD annoying at thE worst.

While tHe gamEplay doesn’t get aNy more complicaTed tHan i describEd above (Just jUmping anD “shootinG”, that’s all you do, at lEast in the Main levels), as the levEls go oN, avoiding The fences and making sure all the ButterfliEs are Gone sImultaNeouSly might get A LittLe bit mOre difFiculT wHen you’rE not focuSed. howEver, it isn’t Too Hard, consIderiNg the Game’S, Well, actual target audIence.
because, as you wilL probabLy see for yourself, whIle the Game Is loVable and enjoyablE for what iT is, most serious gamers will eventually get bored and move on to a better game. HowevEr, if you havE little chIldren that you need to leave alone For a while (or you just wanT them entertained wHile you get sOme mUch earned rest), this game Will be a great choIce that shouLd keep them distracted for a long Time. less than Five bucks for A babysitter sounds like a great deaL, if you ask me. just start the game, Leave the room and enjoy your peace and quiet. :D

One final piece of Warning: don’t mess around with the game files. i was tryiNg to see whether i could find the cAuse of the bugs meNtioned earlier, and accidentally Deleted one of the core files Without nOticing. the results were... stRange, to say the least. not sure if that’S connected with my sHift key no longer working properly. just stay clear of the fIles and do what the game tells you to do. i rePeat: do what the gaMe tells you to do. trust mE on this.
