SPOILERS AHEAD
I don't normally leave a review but I feel like I want to share my experience with the game, hope it helps you! TLDR, game play is lacking but story is great!

I played this game on the middle difficulty, thinking on it now I should have upped it to slightly more difficult.
I want to start with the good;

Story, Character design, environment, and overall mood!
Love the story book we're following, the Tale of Hazel as Catfish says. Hazel is really opinionated, strong, stubborn, but a fun character in my opinion. Hazels perseverance through extremely strange and difficult circumstances; losing her mother, discovering she is a weaver, that the childhood stories she was told are, in fact, REAL, the betrayal of past and current people in her life. She's incredibly strong, opinionated, and stubborn.
I love that each character has a very unique, gorgeous design and interesting features and qualities, I think my favorite character (despite how brief she was in the story) was Ayotunde who turned into The Altamaha-ha, a mermaid, from the pain of losing her son. She's BEAUTIFUL?? I needed more. It was heartwarming to see their souls reunite.
I love the environments we go through, the history, the variety of places we go through! Gorgeous sights and cozy walks through the woods, accompanied by the deep pain of the land and dark moods. I'm a huge fan of the visuals of this game!

Now,, for the bad, and there's a LOT to get into;

REPETITIVE GAME PLAY, and I'm not a fan of the music.

I'll brush through the music, the initial video teasing this game is what hooked me, I loved the blues vibes, but I don't feel like the same quality/wording was put into the other songs. Just didn't resonate, probably just a me thing!

Repetitive game play. This is a big deal breaker for me, at chapter 10/14 it is GRUELING. The pve was fun at first, but has become very repetitive and isn't the most fun or satisfying for me. You have to fight the same enemies constantly in each chapter, at least 4 separate battles. You have a small variety of abilities that you don't get to upgrade into a cooler, more unique ability, you just enhance the existing ones.

After 14 hours, it's getting really boring! I groan when I enter a combat, it's just not fun! I think a good example of combat like this was God of War, their combat kept me engaged and entertained, and satisfied because of the variety of enemies and abilities. + finishers :D

Every chapter is the same format.
Overall, you're looking for Hazels mother and everything is in your way.
Each chapter is a glimpse into someones pain, the history of the land. Each memory is gatekept by the lacking pve fights. Collect 3-4 of these and you gain the weave used on the pain knot, and you reweave the pain away.
The game is mostly parkour, very simple and NO challenging puzzles (as far as I've gotten), just walk from point a to point b, jump around, climb something, move a crate or a train. Every. Single. Level. is extremely samey and easy. It's becoming very un-enjoyable at this point for me, I'd rather watch the rest of the story bits than play them.
Meet someone new, chat it up, maybe help them.
Then you're fighting a new boss. I like the designs of the bosses and the story behind them, but the boss fights are lacking imo. Majority of the fights have been rule of three, three attacks, make them invulnerable, hit them a bunch, repeat. There's no sense of urgency, maybe I should have upped the difficulty? Besides the point, I wish there was a bit of a different formula for both the level design and boss fights, I wish there was more unique experiences that kept you engaged and entertained.
UGH and after you've sealed the knot? The fog/mist run is incredibly annoying at the end of every chapter (post getting your tools). There is no sense of urgency, I turned around and watched the mist just to see how fast it was gaining, and it felt very slow. And it's not difficult to traverse, so it's again just run from point a to point b, jump around, parkour! If you like parkour I guess you'll really enjoy this game. ITS THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I can't stress it enough, it's killing me :(

Also a TON of bugs trying to play with PS5 controller?? Constantly getting stuck and having to reload the game after interacting with objects. Rough and annoying.

Final thoughts..
Love the story, love the characters, love the environments, love love love the art side of South of Midnight, I'm invested in Hazels journey! I hope we find mama alive and well.
Game play is really, really boring for me and I don't want to play the rest just for the story. And for a video game, I think it NEEDS to be at least good. 75% of the energy was poured into the art and story and I am here for that, but.. Yea. Beating a dead horse.
It's to the point where I don't want to play through the rest of the game, I'd rather watch the story on Youtube, and I wouldn't have spent the money if I had known it'd be so grueling. I think will still finish the game and probably come back to this post purely because I spent money on it, but there are my thoughts 10 chapters in!

South of Midnight would be better as a visual novel or a movie rather than a video game.
Thanks for reading, hope it helps you!

cards stack and make new card :D

If you like organization and some strategy I'd suggest this game to you. A peaceful (most of the time) lil game. Buy card packs, open em, make new things, create a town of warriors and defeat your enemies >:D
