Why You Should Consider Playing Bioshock 2

Bioshock 2 is a criminally underrated game, overshadowed by the original Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite. Unlike Bioshock 1, the sequel was taken over by 2K Marin and they did a damn fine job in recreating the world of Rapture. The gameplay, at its core, is largely the same. You use a combination of weapons and special powers called plasmids to battle your way through insane freakish enemies stripped away from humanity now referred to as "splicers".

The story picks up 10 years after the events of the first BioShock. This time you play as a totally different character, a prototype version of Big Daddy named "Subject Delta" searching for a specific Little Sister that was bonded with him. The story is much more focused and easier to digest. The sense of mystery and creepiness of the setting, plot, characters and the overall world present in the original game is somewhat lost in transition but trust me guys it makes up for the moral choices you're gonna make in the game and rich lore present in the form of "audio diaries".

Like gameplay the story progression structure remains intact as well, you'll move through a number of discrete stages where you'll be assigned fetch quests and tasks unique to that area before getting back on the path to the story climax. While it may seem familiar at first 2K Marin made a lot of changes that kept things interesting. There are more enemy varieties like The Big Sisters, they're important to the game's plot so I won't talk about it a lot. The next enemy type is a Brute which is exactly what the name suggests. Rapture looks breathtaking, every place looks beautiful (and sad). You can feel the world of Rapture by listening to the audio tapes. Bioshock series as a whole is an example that "games can be a piece of art". The combat has improved a bit, there are more new weapons and plasmids at your disposal. The length is about 11 hours + 4 on Minerva's Den DLC.

One of the things I loved about the sequel is that none of the areas are recycled. All the locations you see in the game are new and from other side of the underwater Utopia. The devs did not try to mimic the old areas either. Everything feels fresh and original. I was glad to see more new characters in "sane" human form something which was lacking previously. Gameplay is also superior. The story also fills the holes and gaps by answering some of the unexplained questions and events from Bioshock 1 and by also adding new stuff.

Bioshock 2 isn't without its flaws though. I'm not sure why the developers decided to make the game more "linear". You can no longer return to previous levels in order to collect hidden audio diaries something that was possible in the previous game. The game also lacks a compelling villain as good as Andrew Ryan. Some features were removed such as U-invent where you could mix and create new ammo and utility. Bioshock 2 Remastered shockingly runs on the same old Unreal Engine 2.5 something that is unacceptable even for 2010 standards. This was one of the last game to use such outdated technology. The remastered version also lacks a multiplayer mode and seems suffer some technical issues resulting an unstable performance for some PC gamers resulting in crashes to desktop, save files corruption and other bugs. I was quite lucky as my game crashed only twice and thats acceptable to me.

Bioshock 2 remastered also includes Minerva's Den DLC; a standalone story dlc and a direct sequel to Bioshock 2. Do play it as its one of the best DLCs you could get and its well over 4 hours long. Minerva's Den concludes the Rapture storyline. Bioshock Infinite takes place in an alternate universe of Rapture in Burial at Sea episodes.

Highly recommend playing through each game in the series. Get the Bioshock Collection on sale for best deal. Buying the remastered version will also grant you original game from 2010.

My Rating: 8/10
