Risk of Rain was a great 2D platformer that had an endearing retro pixel style graphics and had a plethora of unlockables and secrets. With Risk of Rain 2, Hopoo succeeded in not just creating a worthy successor to the original Risk of Rain, but have surpassed it in almost every aspect.

Gameplay:
When you start a game you choose which character you wish to play as, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles. After that, it's up to you to survive on a hostile alien world while augmenting your character's abilities and stats with items that were scattered on the planets surface from the crashed spaceship you escaped from. You can either tough out a run all on you own, or work with your friend in Co-Op to fight your way through never-ending hordes of enemies while trying to find any way to get off this mysterious planet and unlocking its secrets in the process.

Environments:
Now, I'm not saying it's better because Risk of Rain 2 has 3D gameplay while the first does not. Whether a game is playable in a 2D or 3D environment does not affect a game's quality, but Hopoo took full advantage of the environments they could create. Having a literal extra dimension of depth they could explore and expand their game into, Hopoo made sure that there wasn't a single bit of space in any of the game's levels that wasn't fun or interesting to explore. More often than not, the player would be rewarded for trying to go out of bounds or search every inch of the levels they developed.

Music:
Hopoo made the wise and most excellent choice of getting Chris Christodoulou to reprise his role as the Game's main music composer. Christodoulou has manged to recapture the etheral sci-fi feeling he put into the first game's soundtrack that immerses you into the strange alien world that you are now stranded upon. Anyone familiar with the first game's soundtrack will instantly be able to recognize the second game's soundtrack to have that familiar sound we associate with the Risk of Rain game's overall tone and aesthetic. Those who have not played the first game, or are familiar with it's soundtrack, will still be still be able to appreciate Chris Christodoulou's meshing of synthetic tones and traditional instruments to create music that starts slow and grows in pace and impact as the world is revealed to an awe-struck player.

Support:
The developers have been very interactive and supportive of the community their game quickly garnered. They listened to what players liked and disliked, and even directly implemented mechanics that were suggested by the community because they worked well with the game and made for either a more fun or more streamlined gaming experience.

My Thoughts:
Good Lord do I love this game! Whether I'm playing alone or with friends, it's a blast to play again and again. Even on runs where I felt I was killed unfairly, instead of getting angry I'd be happy to play another run and see if I could get further than the last time. It has great replay value, a soundtrack I could listen to in full even when I'm not playing, impactful visuals that inspire curiosity and wonder, and a developer who actually cares about making the game better and making their playerbase have as much fun as possible. There's honestly not much more you could ask for out of a 3D rogue-like, and I'll be happy to continue playing it in the future!

NieR:Automata might be one of the few games at the top of my favorites list that I can also say is one of the best examples of "what is a good video game?". Although the game is the fourth installment in the Drakenguard and Nier series, you don't need to have played the previous installments to understand the gravity of the situation that N:A's world is in and the struggles it's inhabitants go through. The amount of work and love that went into devolping N:A is shown through it's fluid and unique gameplay, the in depth story and character development, and breath taking visuals.
It's rare for developer Platinum Games to ever take on a project they are not personally invested in, and while it may not be the best decision from a buisness perspective, it's always produced high quality results and given them a dedicated fan base. Platinum brings their thorough understanding of fun and customizable combat in character action games to the table, making for a satisfying and rewarding experience no matter how many times you'll play this game. You're ultimately given three different ways to fight your enemies, each connected to a specific character and their place in the story.
It's evident that the Nier team believes every decision the player makes should have reason from the character's perspective and the ability to impact the world. Even each character's combat style is a reflection of thier personality and way of thinking through their problems. This will ultimately lead the player to decide how to deal with various moral and ethical choices, each having a corresponding and relevant effect on characters or the world. I would also be remiss to not mention that these decisions and choices would mean nothing if the Nier team had not crafted a story that has deep symbolic and metaphorical meanings, and you could be invested in emotionally. Each character is devloped to a point that by the end you will feel a personal connection to them and find youself taking betrayal's personally and fighting to give every charcter a happy ending that seems almost impossible to give them. Meanwhile you will find philosophical connections that make you question what makes something/someone human, or if souls exist or can exist in something that was once souless, and are there differences in souls between different entities.
As for the game's visuals, the team who devloped it made sure to first make something that even people who don't play video games could be infatuated with, and have a sense of wonder invoked deep within them. Their transition from concept to realization was flawless, and the game only brings to life what was once only on paper. I could spend even more time just slowly walking through NieR:Automata's world, taking in the sights and wondering what used to stand in place of the shambles of a ruined world, only given life by the machines and androids that live there now with barely a fraction of their previous true purpose. While some locations are easily identifiable to us for what they once were, we are the ones left questioning how they came to the state they're in and why they are being used for the purpose they are now.
Overall NieR:Automata blends stunning visuals with thought provoking story and endlessly fun gameplay to create a truly timeless experience. It stands among the greats like Shadow of the Colossus and Journey as a game that can connect with people from various backgrounds, and show that video games are a form of art and a medium for culturally impactful storytelling.
