Holden’s Past Relationships
Nostalgia is a very powerful feeling. While it may invoke the desire to return to older and more innocent times, society dictates that you must mature and let go of the past, rightly so. In J.D Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caulfield romanticizes his past and absolutely despises the world around him. Many objects and people are linked to his past, triggering his nostalgia, shown to the reader through anecdotes. Holden Caulfield’s past is symbolized by Jane Gallagher, Holden’s brother Allie, the natural history museum in New York City, and his sister Phoebe.

Lengthening the School Day
Should the school day be lengthened by two hours? No. Adding two hours to the school days has consequences. Some of these are less recreational time and increased stress.
First, increased school time means less time for recreational activities. There is even less time for activities if the student plays an instrument, plays sports, or any other after school activity. Also, a longer school day usually equals more homework. It may not sound like much, but two hours of extra school is a long time.
Second, extra school would cause increased stress for students. A longer school day usually means more homework. More homework means more stress. Too much homework and students will be overwhelmed and do worse on tests, which is the opposite of what MDUSD wants.
Longer school days have consequences such as less recreational time and increased stress. That is why the school day should not be lengthened by two hours.
