I'm going to lead with the fact that this is my favorite souls game by significant margin. I have played, enjoyed, and look back fondly on the entire franchise, but something about the first play-through of this game makes the rest look paltry in comparison. Elden Ring takes a franchise renown for its depressing mood, Incredible level design and fair but brutal combat and turns it on its head in one of my favorite reimaginings since Jak 2 on the PS2.

Tight corridors and claustrophobia have been replaced with a vast open world, dotted with some of the most intricate and brutal zones the franchise has ever presented in the form of Legacy Dungeons. Out in the open world itself, you'll find yourself exploring a series of wondrous and alien environments filled with the remnants of once great civilizations, as well as a variety of World Bosses, Dungeons, Puzzles, Gear, and every assortment of goody the game has to offer.

There is a degree of repetition to this game, in that some tile sets and bosses can be a little... overused at times. However, I cannot stress the shear scope of this game. I highly recommend playing without spoiling the map, as its truly a treat to watch the world unfold.

On the same note, visually speaking, this is not the most hyper realistic game you'll ever see. However, it compensates in that it is still ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. From Soft is known for its vistas and "wow" moments, and this game takes that to a new degree by constantly making you look around in sheer wonder. From the color scheme to the world design, From Soft manages to take all the ideas that made them famous and redefine them by a golden standard.

Difficulty remains a controversial issue, but I think this is just the right difficulty. If you steamroll ahead, following the Graces and progressing the story alone, you will run into nigh insurmountable odds that will bring on a sweat for even the saltiest souls vet. However, unlike before, you have a massive area full of side content to enrich, empower, and add variety to your combat style, and it will have you tossing bombs, slinging knives, and upgrading that new sword you found in a cave to overcome these massive spikes with a natural ease that reeks of a masterpiece.

Truly, this stands next to Bloodborne and DS3 as masterclasses in the genre, but unlike those, it marks a moment of progression for the series, breaking free from several of its bonds and paving the way for even greater things to follow. Keep an eye out for the next From "Souls" game, its going to make this one look terrible.

10/10, so good I even got 100%.

Runs well, excellent gameplay and atmosphere, full of cool buttons like the Team Cam that allows you to see your partners helmet feed on your UI. Cant wait to see how this evolves over time.

Something about the combat in this game just doesn't feel right. I love the setting and the story, but I can't quite grow to love the controls. Considering how front and center the story is in this game, I'll give it a pass just this once.

Sneaky Japanese Souls Yee Yee.
Not as replayable or entertaining as its predecessors, but full of amazing visuals and surprises for even the most seasoned of souls player. Looking at you, Monkey Valley.

While not my cup of tea, you'd have to be blind not to see just how cool this game is.
Risk of Rain 2 is the natural evolution of the first game, and sacrifices none of its charm for its improved combat and 3D style.
