I love the art-style, I love the story, I love the music, I love the controls!

The only thing I do not like -and this says more about me than the game- is the rogue-lite nature of the game. You build up a character with various upgrades during the run, and when the run is over you have to start all over again. Having my slaughtering of monsters ended at the end of a dungeon, feels a bit abrupt. "Congratulations! You just beat a boss! here's some money to spend on marginal upgrades." Normally you'd get a new weapon or piece of armour. As I said, I realize this might be more a problem with me and what I want, rather than with the game. I thought I should mention it for those of you out there who have similar hopes.

With that said, I can recognize that the way it works in this game is still ingenious.
When you leave a dungeon the story progresses with a marvellously voice-acted cutscene, regardless of whether you lost or was victorious. Honestly the depth of the storytelling in this game is... unbelievable.

If you love rogue-likes and rogue-lites, then I heartily recommend it to you!

I love the feel of stomping around in a giant mech. I also appreciate the throwback to the old Syndicate games with how the maps are laid out.

The campaign structure is a (long) series of missions and I would have liked a more linear and cohesive experience. In fact you don't really ever have to read the briefings or debriefings between missions.

Controls could do with a bit of tweaking as well, the game picked up my x-box one controller just fine and will roll with it, but having to control both distance and direction with the right stick makes for an unpleasant experience. I would have liked for the game to turn on autoaim for distance, and had the crosshairs locked at a specific distance when using a controller instead.

Using the mouse for aiming works perfectly, but movement with the keyboard can get tedious, as you often have to walk diagonally.

Thankfully, almost all of these issues can to a certain extent be fixed in the settings. If aiming with a controller is hard, you can either alter the sensitivity, or lower the game's speed to give you more time.

If having to press W and D at the same time to move diagonally gets tedious for you, change the settings so that W moves you diagonally (either left OR right).

So the solutions are all there if you have the time and inclination to experiment until you find what fits you like a glove.

In short: I really recommend it!

I love the artstyle, I love the music, I love the control scheme, I love the story and the setting.

Now for the bad:
It will take around half a second for your character to attack when you press the attack button.
It is sometimes unnecessarily hard. The game expects you to die often. and one of the quests is to find and kill three particular enemies in different parts of the map without dying once.
You can technically finish the game without all of your abilities and powerups, which I found odd for a metroidvania.

But all in all, the things I do not love about it does not overshadow all of the separate things I do love with the game.

Disclaimers: Initial Not Recommended. but if they can fix the issues, I will change the review to Recommended, since the base game IS good. the PC port just has issues.

I play most games through Steam Link on my big TV (720p).
This… does not work well with Halo Reach.

The text is truly minuscule. Almost can’t be read. Not that you'll read a lot in game, since subtitles only show up in cutscenes.

It’s a slog to get the controls to work like they did on the 360, I haven’t quite gotten there yet, but it *feels* possible to do so.
edit: With the release of Halo: CEA, I took the time to set the gamepad up the way I wanted, and it does feel very reminiscent of the old 360 experience.

Your progress and armor unlocks from the 360 version do not carry over to this version. which I found annoying.

With all that, you might ask “why don’t you just play the 360 version, if you love it so much!?”
Simple, I no longer have a functioning 360. So get off my back maybe?

Is it no longer possible to buy *just* the Borderlands GOTY? Are you required to also spend money on the "Enhanced" edition?

I'm pretty sure this is the best-running version of the game so far. Certainly the easiest to get running these days (DOSBox- and Emulator versions generally have some glitches).

The added graphical and audio options are really good. Except for the Italian translation which is apparently literal garbage.

Controls are really good, but not rebindable. Might take a bit of time to get used to if you've been playing the SNES version.

The intro sequence has that weird slow-down when the ship is closing in on Conrad, just like every other version of the game... I'm not sure if I disapprove of them not fixing that, or if I approve of them keeping it classic?

The rewind mechanic is also a sight for sore eyes, considering how seldom you find save points.

My Game of the year 2019... which feels weird to write, but I stand by it.

Atmospheric classic Sci-fi RPG in the vein of Eye of the Beholder, and Legend of Grimrock.
Great music, great art, great characters, great gameplay.

A ridiculously charming puzzle-platformer.
Perfect pixel-art. Great music. Subliminal map design. But a bit light on story.

Gameplay mechanics:
You get three buttons: Left, Right, and Bomb. Go nuts.

I loved Another World and I would marry Flashback if I could, and I *really* love the graphical aesthetic they’ve got going in this game…

Too bad they decided to bring back the control schemes of the games of the 80s. There are *quite* a few innocuous control innovations that’ve come in the last 30 years, I feel. I’m all for slow methodical gameplay, but… just the jumping is the worst I’ve experienced … ever? the character can some how jump 6 meters horizontally (plus two, as long as there is a ledge).. but only 5 centimetres vertically?

shame. With proper controls I would have given this something like a 10 or at least a 9.

Highly recommended.
Even if you love the Alien universe, but hate horror games, I would still recommend you buy this game. There are mods out there to alter the Xenomorph's behaviour to suit the limits of your heart.
So whether you want a not-quite-leisurely stroll through a beautiful station as it falls apart, or you want a Xenomorph that can hear your heartbeat through several hundred meters of steel and vacuum. As long as you love this franchise, this is a game to get.
