The most I can say is that it's a faithful port of the Anniversary edition that came out in 2011. It is not, however, a faithful port of the Halo CE that came out on Xbox in 2001.

I'm giving this a cautious Recommend, with a lot of caveats.

CONS:
  • gamepads are not fully rebindable, but keyboard and mouse is.
  • They've introduced more glitches than the original had.
  • Most of the glitches that already existed has not only not been fixed, they've been made worse.
  • It is not very well optimized, so I had quite a few frameskips, even when playing with classic graphics.
  • The remastered textures feel very out of place, and alter the maps too much from their original feel (example: Truth & Reconciliation is now set in a jungle, instead of a desert), they are also way too bright. you'll never need a flashlight, even at night.
  • If you play on classic graphics, you'll notice that reflections are almost comically wrong.
  • Using the Steam Link to play on a big TV, I had trouble seeing some icons (like weapon pickups), and reading text between missions.
  • Last, but by no means least: Achievements unlock in the wrong order (more below)

Edit: I found a solution to the weird reflections. Change Crosshair Position to "Centered", to solve it.

PROS:
  • Playing with a controller feels perfect. Even better than it did back in 2001. They've added more settings to sensitivity and deadzones so you can get it exactly the way you wanted.
  • fully rebindable keymappings for keyboard and mouse.
  • Music is as great as it always was.
  • Many of the old speedrunning strats or beneficial glitches still work.

Essentially, it is still Halo Combat Evolved. If you came to get your nostalgia fix, it will do it for you.

Achievement unlocks:
Pillar of Autumn unlocks the achievement for Truth and Reconciliation
Halo unlocks Silent Cartographer
Truth and Reconciliation unlocks Assault on the Control Room
Silent Cartographer unlocks Pillar of Autumn
Assault on the Control Room unlocks Halo
343 Guilty Spark and onward unlock the correct achievement.

The same goes for par time achievements, except you wont get the achievements until you've finished all of the above.
Example: finishing the mission Pillar of Autumn will not unlock the achievement for Truth and Reconciliation or Pillar until you've finished Truth's par time as well. If you finish all the par times, you will get all of the achievements unlocked however.

As a first-impression, I'm liking the game. It takes what older mech-games did well and expands on it. If you liked Armored Core or Zone of the Enders, you'll like this.

you can upgrade your Arsenal(Mech) by grabbing new weapons from mechs that you defeat, you upgrade your person by buying implants.

So you got the action. you got the collectathon. you got the urge to complete your arsenal.

but, sadly, you haven't got the story or the in-mission bad-ass music.

First, some house-keeping. it's been tagged as a metroidvania, which is not the case. there is no free-roaming, exploration, or backtracking... and with that out of the way, let's continue.

It's a side-scrolling, puzzle-platformer with absolutely stunningly gorgeous -and viscerally gruesome- pixel art.

In terms of mechanics, you solve puzzles by either jumping around, or possessing enemies (and reading their minds and/or memories)... and as you finish more and more chapters you unlock new abilities like double-jump or dash... but it is not possible to go back to previous chapters and use your new abilities to solve older puzzles.

The art style is, as I wrote, gorgeous, and gruesome... and I cannot stress that enough! some bits are viscerally disgusting. Do not play this game with children in the vicinity.

My only two minor complaints are:
  • For a PC game, and even for a 2D game, it has a surprising lack of graphical settings,
  • I'll be as vague as possible... in a certain boss-fight it is not very well indicated that even though you can't see an enemy's head, you can still jump unto it to possess it.

A sedate romp through a shattered world, trying to figure out its history to, to see how it all happened... and maybe fix it?

THE GOOD:
  • I love how the game teaches you to translate the inscriptions. It's innovative and logical.
  • The world building is off the charts!
  • Excellent sound-design!
  • The artstyle feels weird at first, 2D characters in a 3D world? what? but it really grew on me. I think they get more out of characters this way than they would have with 3D character models.
  • Stable. I haven't had a single bug or crash in over 17 hours of game play.
  • the game has a New Game+ mode, where you get to keep the confirmed translations of words.

THE BAD:
  • Some mechanics are severely under-used or under-explained, like fatigue. It came up maybe four times during a playthrough and it always caught me off-guard.
  • If you hover over a destination on the map, Aliyah and a massive text-box will pop up to talk about said destination. Obscuring a majority of the map. Not just the once, but every time you hover over it. Even by accident. Extremely annoying if you're looking for a specific spot in a sea of other spots.
  • There is only a single save-file. Adding to that, you cannot restart a New Game+ playthrough. it will erase everything, including the original run. so you have to start from absolute scratch.
  • No graphical options what-so-ever. Seriously, HOW? this is a PC game? led me change the graphical options!

It's odd that, despite all the bad points, I really love this game... Over the course of two playthroughs I fell in love with this world. However, if you are at all unsure, then wait for a sale.

A marvellous return of the Castlevania type of 2d platformers.

If you loved Symphony of the Night, Circle of the Moon, and/or Aria of Sorrow in particular, then you will love this game as well.

This game takes the soul-system from Aria of Sorrow and expands to excessively fun levels. Every time you kill an enemy, it has a change to drop a "Shard", which you can then equip to use one of its abilities. Kill an enemy that can throw fireballs; equip its Shard and then you too can throw fireballs.

You have 5 different kinds of magics: Conjure, Manipulative, Directional, Passive, and Familiar. and you can equip one shard in each slot... and there are literally hundreds of shards to collect.

The only problem with this system is that most non-progression shards have only a 4% chance to drop. So whenever I find a new enemy the game essentially halts for 10-30 minutes while I farm said enemy for its shard. Further complicating this is that if you get more than one of any shard, it increases said shards effectiveness (or "grade"), most often it makes it do more damage, but in the case of Familiars, it gives them more abilities to use.

The fact that it's a 2d platformer inside a 3d world makes for some odd bugs and visual effects. At first I wasn't sure about the artstyle either, but it's grown on me.

Overall I really recommend it, Check it out!

A 2d platformer with tower defence mechanics? yes please!

The only concern I have is that if you jump and even just hint at holding 'up', it will interrupt the jump and you will fall straight down, like a rock. I have died many times because I tried jumping to a ledge I could grab on to, and in preparation to climb up, I pressed diagonally. only to stop mid-jump, some feet from the ledge and fall to my death.
Other than that, controls work really well, and are fully rebindable.

game mechanics wise, It's great! the gameplay loop of caravan for upgrades, explore new ruins, defend the objective from a horde of monsters, feels good and none of the parts really overstays their welcome.

My only concern is that while you can go back to earlier missions, they do not give you the resources needed to upgrade your abilities. only your equipment (which is mainly just your weapon).

I love the art-style, the music, the story, and the gameplay!

Aside from a small concern about the controls, and the game not letting me disable voice-over AND subitles at the same time. I love it.

I would like the ability to remap the jump to either one of the triggers or shoulder buttons on my controller, but that's really my only concern with the game.

I love the inclusion of being able to switch the control scheme from QWERTY to DVORAK And AZERTY. And BY GOD(!) more games need to include the ability to switch to dyslexic-friendly fonts! It's such a small thing to change, but has such a massive impact on the playability of a game if you have dyslexia! Good work! More of that!

The art-style is awesome and works really well with the gameplay and story, the voice-acting is sublime, and while there is not a lot of music in the game, what is there is awesome and well-implemented into the actual gameplay.

A short hike up the mountain that can take ∞ days to finish.

If you are easily distracted like me, then the side-requests will make you come back for more and more. I can go up to the mountain top at any time, I swear! I don't have a problem, I'm just curious what this little duck wants. it's no big deal right? I can talk with this duck for a few seconds before... right?

In short, There is nothing I do not love about this game. Art-style, music, story, controls, map-design... all of it.
