Bought it on itch.io loooooong ago and clocked hundreds of hours in that version which is why my Steam time is so low. Either way the game can only go up, each update has been both meaningful and an improvement in all regards and the developer actively listens to feedback and works on it.

Also it's damn fun to get some twin-linked guns on your bird and shred ♥♥♥♥. If you enjoy fwooshing around in a jet-plane (or prop if you browse the extensive workshop) you'll have fun with this game, it's simple yet charming style and mirror sheen polished gameplay.

I'm not the sort of person to write reviews. I'd rather be playing the game in all honesty but I need to come clean and air our my issues with Just Cause 3 so I'll stop trying to justify it over Just Cause 2.

Does it do things better? Yes. Does it do enough better? No. Not even slightly. In fact it does a lot worse.

It's poorly designed in a lot of ways (you want to grapple and instantly enter a helicopter? Push E. Push it too early, which is very easy, and you will rag-doll into the side of it and probably get #rekt by the roters on the way over.) There is no effort in the bases or towns, they are all cookie-cutter and a chore to do. In Just Cause 2 every base was so much more unique and fun to play with and taking over one was a big event to boot. It all just feels less involved than Just Cause 2.

It's less fun.
It's more difficult in all the wrong ways.
It's got less going on.
It feels emptier.
It's stepping over itself in terms of design and controls.

Just Cause 3 can summarised in it's main mechanics.
You have infinite sticky bombs but they're your last resort or the main tool of a very boring player. The tether is given a lot of focus but it's not fun to use.
You can't fast travel infinitely anymore and must use flares which can be upgraded, however you can bypass this by doing two other things.
Helicopters are piss weak in terms of guns, much easier to control and downed by a random number of SAMs (and it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is random to, I've gone down to one in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gunship and taken six in a low tier attack chopper) and SAMs respawn.
Vehicles aren't fun to control and all are slow as hell and made of tin-foil and a wish when it comes to gunfire and explosives.
There's no weapon varity or progress, you're given your meagre lot at the start and have to deal and can only unlock a number of special weapons which won't fare much better than the bog-standard RPG you've been using or the LMG in terms of sheer practicality which is the only terms Just Cause 3 understands.
Chaos serves no purpose as far as we could discern over a long weekend of gaming it non-stop.
You respawn at the base you were fighting with everything reset except the permanent stuff. No more commitment, just "LOL, died, trying again right now."
Outposts are beyond lazy. Three chaos objects at most (boring ones too, no giant radar towers here), the only thing stopping you from clearing them in seconds is the SAM sites, serious, you could reduce this game to a 3 hour speed run if you had a mod to disable SAMs on outposts.

What is going on? It feels like it's had the soul sucked of it and the fun went along for the ride. Just Cause 2 had it's flaws, yes but it did gameplay much better. Hell, it's story was kind of fun at quite a few moments too. Just Cause 3... really has no story to it.

Listen, just go buy Just Cause 2. It's more fun, got more going on, more things to do, hell of a lot more cinematic, handles a hell of a lot better, runs a lot better, can be modded with a lot of fun toys, has vehicles you actually want to get in and drive and the powerful things feel powerful because they weighed properly. It's just better. Yes you have to sit through the item drop screen for things, but the pay off is worth it.

I'm sorry Just Cause 3, I had to defend you as the good angel but I spent more time picking you apart than praising you. I tried to love you.
