The game takes place in a story that takes place between 3957-3956 BBY (years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope), thus, a time in the galaxy referred to as The Old Republic, a period preceding the Mandalorian Wars, which gives rise to the galactic conflict of the Jedi Civil War, after the Jedi knights, Revan and his apprentice, Malak raid on the front and emerge victorious from the Republic's conflict against the warriors of Mandalore.

Revan Supreme Commander of the Army of the Republic, savior, hero, now corrupted by an unknown evil and consumed by the dark side, he claimed his place as the new Dark Lord of the Sith by inspiring his followers in the crusade movement, betraying the Republic and founding the new Sith Empire. Darth Revan along with his new apprentice, Darth Malak. succumbed to the Republic on the brink of despair, where many Jedi Knights and Republic soldiers yielded to the dark side, serving the new lords of the Sith.



The game begins by creating our character with personal traits and characteristics, assigning a name and skills giving rise to the Republic cruiser Endar Spire, where the Sith give a surprise blow, we wake up in a cabin, we must quickly go to an escape pod, ending up stranded on the planet of Taris and surrounded by the Sith Navy that subjects the planet in a quarantine in order to find the Jedi, Bastila; crucial to the war effort. Our companion Carth Canasi suggests that we must find her before it is too late.

We set out to explore the planet from the upper levels to the underground wastelands, we must be resourceful and use all the necessary resources and help we can get to survive until we can finally find Bastila and escape from Taris.

Immediately after our escape is shown and mention is made of visions of the force we come to have, to which Bastila asks the Jedi council for an audience with us so our presence is cited and starting our Jedi training, making us a series of brief tests to decide our inclination towards a role in the order, we can choose between Jedi Guardian, Jedi Consular, or Jedi Sentinel. as a first major task, the Jedi council entrusts us to go to the ancient ruins that are in the vicinity, where we find an ancient droid referring to itself and the ruins as created by The Builders and that we must pass a series of tests if we want to prove ourselves worthy of the power of Star Forge. Upon completion of the tests, a hologram with a spatial map is revealed; The Star Map, showing us a series of locations, the planets Tatooine, Kashyyk, Maanan, Yavin and Korriban: the planet of the Sith. We must explore these planets to find all the Star Maps and find the route to Star Forge in order to stop Darth Malak, crossing several characters offering or asking for help, making decisions along the way that will affect our course, witnessing the effects of the conflict on the different planets and crossing numerous Sith trying to stop us.



One of the first things to mention is that, due to its age, the game may present compatibility errors when trying to run it on new Windows systems, even so it seems to present no major problem when trying to play from Linux / Steam OS + Steam Play (Proton 5.0-10). Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 is recommended. On any system it is recommended to disable Frame Buffer Effects and Vertex Butter in swkotor.ini and make use of UniWS for compatibility with high resolutions.



From the first moment the game amazes you with the attention to detail: at the moment of setting foot in Taris, it is impossible not to be dazzled by the stage in front of us presenting a relaxing sunset on the upper levels, the nostalgia produced by passing through the streets of Tattooine, and a sense of suspense when exploring the forests and territories of Kashyyk, where music always takes a role of making clear the intention and emotion that is intended to be achieved in the player when circulating through each scenario.

The sense of belonging when interacting with the predefined dialogues for our choice, even if they are predefined, provide us with the greatest possible freedom to interact with the main characters and NPCs around us giving us the dimension of a realistic conversation giving us a fascinating roleplay experience within the Star Wars universe.

The interface and gameplay may seem overwhelming for players unfamiliar with roleplay titles and more specifically those making use of the d20 system where the actions go in turns in time intervals that can make combat more difficult, but nevertheless, it is usually intuitive and does not present to be major problem when playing. Handling items and inventory can become very simple and players will be able to interact with items freely as long as the specified requirements are met, much like the interaction with sellers willing to trade with you that you can find almost anywhere in the game.

The decisions made by our character are reflected both in his personality and possibilities within the role he takes within the story, being light and darkness the two paths he could take.

The story is predisposed from the first moment of the game, to be one of the most shocking experiences we can witness, where progressively the threads of a masterful story are assembled, absolutely shocking and that inspires us to give ourselves control of our own history and destiny while we have the courage and determination necessary, without more one of the best stories of the entire Star Wars franchise and within its genre in videogames, taking their place as an exceptional game even today.
