Good game, especially when your boat gets stuck and you immediately die after collecting loot for 2 and a half hours

NOTE: I wrote this review on the day of release, right after finishing the game for the first time

As a huge fan of Yume Nikki ever since I first saw the game, when this game finally came out I just knew i had to buy it, play it and of course write a review. Mostly because Kikiyama has always been this illusive figure who made one of the games which has been close to my heart for over 7 years now, and there wasn't really any possibility to give anything back for that, untill now of course.
Well, where do I begin? The original Yume Nikki is one of my favourite games of all time, and after first seeing the game being announced after over 13 years of the original release in the hands of a completely different developer I was a bit skeptical, but after buying and playing this game I can say that I've quite enjoyed the game, even though it might not truly hold a candle to the original.

YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- is basically a reimagining of the original Yume Nikki released back in 2004, only this time it focuses a bit more on the story telling and gameplay, instead of the exploration and surrealism of the original, it also borrows some elements from games like LIMBO and INSIDE, for example the platforming and puzzle solving.
For the rest it borrows alot of things from the orignal Yume Nikki, but there are a few new things, like new creatures, new areas and unlockables, for the rest you still make your way through the nexus going from world to world gathering effects. I know that not everyone is a huge fan of this new style, and I still have some mixed feelings about it aswell, and if you've never played the original I HIGHLY recommend you do before buying this, as it's free on Steam.

The main problems I had with this game was the lack of effects and surrealism from the original. This game only has 5 effects instead of the 24 from the original, and the game has a distinct lack of the weird surrealism that the original had, that's most likely because of the more realistic approach to this game in terms of art style and presentation. Another problem i had with the game was that despite there being alot of beautiful and varied environments, you can't really explore them which i thought was rather disappointing. The game is also very short because of the lack of effects to collect and lack of exploration unlike the original.
These are really the only real complaints I have, besides some of the bugs I encountered at the time of writing this review.

A bunch of characters from the original appear in this game aswell in one form or another, which I greatly appreciate, from the jellyfish creatures to Poniko and Uboa, most of the familiar faces are still all here, along with some new faces aswell which is always pleasing to see what weird things Kikiyama can come up with.

Because of the game's length and price I highly recommend you pick up this game during a sale.

TL;DR: It's an okay remake/reimagining but doesn't quite hold a candle to the the original. 6/10
