gameplay mogs every other boomer shooter from the last 5 years

setting mogs every faux-deep tryhard dystopia setting from the last 5 years

soundtrack mogs ever... ok it's an acquired taste

real ♥♥♥♥ though this game has something for everyone underneath the oppressive surface. compelling setting, tight movement and gunplay, fantastic unlock and speed-chasing with equally enabling level design. it's overwhelmingly positive for a reason.

It's like pulling teeth trying to play with friends with new characters, but still an outrageously fun game.

Early Access Review
UPDATE 2:

So the game got updated again and personally I thought many of the changes were excellent and exactly what I would've wanted coming from the older versions I'd played. What I wasn't prepared for was the new content that blew my expectations away.

Aside from many many quality of life changes and general functionality improvements that, I as an older player, found scratching every itch, the new chapter of the game surprised me.

From the get go, the map design fully broke out of whatever confines it had impressed in the previous chapters, and immediately lent much credibility to the otherwise stifled movement options available prior. Already large and open arenas fell away to totally open platform-based map design. Despite the occasionally strange situation encountered due to the doorway restrictions extending all the way through the playable map, the new areas introduced let you really fly around with the grapple, creating many scenarios yet unseen.

As the chapter progressed, the encounters also did a good job of reflecting the chaotic, hectic nature of a nightmare nearing its conclusion. Cohesion and recognizable features give way to more illusory and imaginary environments. Paired with the narrative beneath, as well as more adventures in the hospital, the atmosphere was maintained and nurtured properly.

The updates to the gameplay, such as NG+ and Survival, also served to improve the overall quality of the game. The survival mode became a small obsession of mine as I started getting more used to the new movement options, as well as providing a much needed increase in enemies to slaughter. The NG+, on the other hand, went out of its way to scale in such a way that I didn't feel like I was any more overpowered than usual.

All in all, the game is in a very good place.

UPDATE: PLEASE PLEASE ADD PLAYABILITY AFTER YOU REACH THE END OF CHAPTER 2. I finished the boss that marks the end of Chapter 2 and immediately hit something tragic: I can't play! I can't use my upgraded perks or my saved weapon or anything! While I can start a new save and repeat the grind, I must admit, I'm spoiled. Especially so soon after my first run, jogging around the early levels and replaying the perk minigames isn't enough. I need the carnage! I NEED THE SLAUGHTER! Devs your game is amazing but I can't help but lament my inability to play more.

My best suggestion is, as a placeholder, just let me sleep and go back to the hub area, with all of the portals open again. Whichever I run into starts that string of levels again, until I beat the boss. Then, return to the hub as usual, of course with every portal still active, and do it again. I beg of you. IM PLEADING. PLEASE. PLEASE. YOUR GAME IS SO GOOD.

Also some optimization might be nice too, but I just want to play. If I see an update in the next month or so with anything like I suggested above, I can GUARAN-FAKIN-TEE I will hit 50 hours EASILY!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!

Since I like this game I wrote a lot, TL;DR below.

It's insane how fluid this game feels. Despite the art style and presentation, this game is a fully functioning 3D game. The movement feels tight and responsive, which matters in the multiple puzzle platforming sections that appear to give you a shot at better loot, and offers many maneuvers to help aid in level traversal as well as combat. The platforming as well, unlike what you would expect from a 3D platformer/shooter, feels very fun to perform, and is almost always optional save from certain level areas. I had a lot of fun beating the variety of courses I encountered, and it served as a nice mixup to the normal gameplay of shooting and running, alongside the perk minigames.

Enemies are exceptionally well done, and feel challenging and chunky to attack without being too overwhelming or bullet spongy on their own. Again, this is where the 2D sprites belie the 3D functionality underneath. Enemies path properly, never get caught on geometry where you'd expect otherwise, and boast very pleasing headshot hitboxes. The variety of enemies is also well done, and progression of more advanced enemy types flaunt more varied attack patterns and styles rather than a simple palette swap with increased health. I especially love how when you kill enemies, their 2D sprites become 3D models, kinda like cardboard cutouts, and fall over. It's immensely gratifying. The bosses too aren't exceedingly challenging, but provide just enough variety to satisfy that feeling of progression.

The weapons are also a treat. While the roguelite stats occasionally feel useful, they are more often than not underwhelming aside from blood ammo, which is a great detractor. The actual variety between weapons, however, is fantastic. Each weapon offers something unique, and while I found myself with preferred choices, every weapon I tried had a clear cut function that felt interesting and useful. My favorite so far has definitely been the Consecrated Whip: that thing blasts EVERYTHING for the low cost of 5 magic ammo.

The game mechanics as well feel great. The procedural level generation, while occasionally giving me some templated rooms that I definitely recognized, is stable. Likewise, as the player unlocks more and more movement techniques, the overall design of arenas really opens up, creating opportunities for really exciting fights. Dying never feels punishing either. Sure you have to replay the level, but you lose nothing else besides that single level's progress. All the gold you collected remains, and while you don't get to sell the other weapons you collected, you still hold on to the last weapon you picked to keep. This leads us into possibly my favorite feature of the game, weapon retaining:

At the end of every level you must decide what weapon to keep. This selection is limited to a level 1 weapon, however, unlocking additional perks expands the level cap of what you can select. As long as a weapon is under a certain level, you can keep it, regardless of what tier it is. This results in many quirks to gameplay, each of which I absolutely adore. For starters, it forces all us kleptomaniacs into a more comfortable headspace. Knowing we can only pick one weapon to keep has saved me from obsessing over what I'm carrying. It also limits the sort of firepower that you can bring between levels, as you may find higher level weapons but be unable to carry them over, preventing you from steamrolling the game due to one lucky find. That one weapon you pick, however, allows you to confidently approach the next level knowing that the one weapon you DID pick is there to have your back as you progress. (GO CONSECRATED WHIP!)

I haven't explored the game nearly enough to have opinions on everything, I haven't even beat it yet, although I'm four bosses in. I wish the reroll stats seller was a bit more varied, often it feels like a stat is locked and the reroll only changes the specific value. Other than that, I really haven't found anything that really bothers me beyond better optimization. Fantastic game, feels amazing to play.

TL;DR Movement and shooting feels very very good, and very very fun. Enemies are exceptionally varied and all have unique threat patterns, as well as appearances and sounds. The level generation is slick as hell, and the weapons are all super duper fun to use. As far as Early Access titles go, this game is essentially finished, so I cannot wait for the degrees of polish and new content that will continue to come as time proceeds. My only real gripe is that when you gain the chance to reroll stats on weapons, it often times feel restrictive, as you cannot roll a malus into a bonus (or vice versa, fortunately), and most rerolls seem to only change the numerical value instead of the actual bonus (i.e. Pull 250% will get rerolled into Pull 315% etc.). Likewise you cannot reroll Blood Ammo, which kinda sucks, cause some weapons really, really do not like blood ammo.
