TF2 was the most fun I’ve ever had in a video game ever. “Was” is the keyword here.

The game is plagued by countless bugs and imbalances, optimization is nonexistent, cheaters are rampant in almost every match and are actively improving their cheats in an ongoing attempt to kill the game, casual and competitive are barely functional, community servers are struggling to stay afloat, and the community itself is a festering cesspool of toxicity and maliciousness, all while Valve doesn’t even acknowledge anything. They’ve proven that they do not care.

The game’s description says it’s constantly updated, and ifn’t they ain’t the granddaddy of all liars. Major updates are basically nonexistent nowadays, and seasonal updates consist of nothing more than microtransactions and shovelware. Very rarely are bugs actually fixed and balance changes implemented. Content that actually is added is the work of the community. Very little work is done on Valve’s part. And the small amount of work they do often breaks several things.

The new player experience is horrible as well. It’s been 13 years and no proper tutorial including all of the classes and mechanics has been implemented. The new users forum does not function at all. And to top it all off, much of the community has an anti-new-player mindset and berates new players for doing poorly, rather than helping them improve and learn. Sure, there are players who will teach novices, and their efforts are cherished, but these types of players are few and far between.

And don’t even get me started on Mann Vs. Machine. The people who play this godforsaken game mode are pure, concentrated, carcinogenic toxicity. I highly recommend you just avoid it altogether or play with a group of friends. The math has been done, it’s less expensive and less resource-intensive to just buy your shiny weapon skins. Don’t torture yourself trying to complete tours for loot. It’s just not worth it.

With all this said, if you are enjoying the game, please do continue to enjoy it. TF2 is an amazing game even in its failing state. If you still find the game fun, more power to you, and I hope you continue to have fun.

Rest in Peace Rick May.
