Fallout 3 was born out of Interplay's sordid history. Black Isle had already created it's own version of Fallout 3 that was never sold. Instead Interplay sold off the rights of Fallout to Bethesda who made this version on Oblivion's engine.

As much as I rag on Fallout 3 I have to acknowledge that Bethesda really went above and beyond with how well they did their homework. Most of the subtle 1950's satire was replicated extremely well with this game. Adding to that they decided to set it in D.C. to have creative control which was an excellent idea in my opinion. It allowed for unique locations like Little Lamplight, the Dunwich building and the Oasis.

However where my complaints start mostly have to do with the plot and the gameplay. For starters the main quest is moralistic garbage, painting the protagonist with the broadest brush possible as either the savior of humanity or the antichrist. The gameplay was also very video-gamey. With enemies taking a full 10 bullets to the face and still not dying.

There are mods that fix most of my complaints besides the plot. Even still when New Vegas came out 2 years later I found it fixed all the problems I saw with F3. Regardless, Fallout 3 is still a very enjoyable experience. Just not a perfect one.
