One Step From Eden is a fun twist on roguelite/roguelikes that is very reminiscent of the Megaman Battle Network series of games, albeit more twitch reflex intensive than those games. You take a starting deck of spells and traverse 8 "worlds" with branching paths that lead into various scenarios, mini boss rooms, "hostage" rooms, where you have to beat enemies fast enough to save NPCS to be rewarded with money or artifacts, or even health. Shops (of course), and even treasure rooms, where the treasure chests have varying unlock requirements, such has having super high defense so only high damage spells can break them, or self-healing, or even just a time limit. These keep the game feeling fairly fresh throughout a multitude of runs. The boss battles are, of course the main focus of this game, and they are done well, except for a few instances late into runs, no boss feels inherently cheap, and In my experience, a loss is often less frustrating and more humbling, as you can quite easily see where you made the missteps that made you lose. Unlocking characters is fun, though I wish it were a little more difficult, since once you've unlocked one, it's rather easy to unlock all of them, save one. The end bosses are also well varied and feel suitably difficult. The "best" part of this game though, in my opinion is the option to either spare or destroy the bosses, after you've won against them. Sparing them offers you small boons, such as global damage at the beginning of encounters, to a saving grace if you drop to 0 hp one time. Destroying bosses offers something else, but I'll let that be discovered as you play. All in all, it's very fun, and it's amazingly addicting when you do hit that sweet spot of rolling amazing spells and synergies to just blow back every enemy. I reccommend it to anyone who was even remotely a fan of the Megaman Battle Network Series games back on the GBA and roguelike/roguelite enthusiasts.
