Library Of Ruina (NON-SPOILERS)


Background
The long awaited sequel to Lobotomy Corp, Project Moon's second game in this universe, though it is a sequel the play style is completely different. Though that can put off some people coming from the first game and others will be put off even more due to the fact that it is a turn-based card game, but the mechanics aren't that complex early on and if you get stuck, they have manuals that can be opened at any time to assists you if you need to brush up on anything you need help with.

Beginning Of The Story
This story starts like any other, A man finding himself in a strange new world, finding a new employer and having to deal with books and people trying to steal said books. Why you may ask? That is for you to find out but either way this can only end with you and guests slapping the ♥♥♥♥ out of each other.


Stats
The stats are simple showing things like HP and Stagger Resist and resistances, they are basically what DMG type they are weak or strong against. There is 3 types of DMG, Blunt, Pierce, and Slash, and there is 3 levels of resistance, Endured, Normal, and Fatal. Which are important due to how Stagger works, along with HP they have stagger which has its own resistances and if their stagger bar get depleted they becomed Staggered which is a time to strike as they take DOUBLE DMG during the time they are staggered which they stay staggered for once scene then it resets, though by that time they should be dead, but you have to watch out since the enemy can stagger you too.



Combat
Now when it comes to combat it is pretty straight forward, at the start of each scene characters roll a dice to see in what order the attacks come in, higher the number the faster it is. Think of it like D&D's initiative During this you can see who your enemy is attacking so you can prepare attacks in kind causing a clash to happen making it so whoever gets the highest dice roll wins and deals DMG, Blocks DMG, or evade enemy attacks, this is dependent on what cards you use but characters that are faster than the enemy can clash them instead, making it so you can protect allies that have low HP, but only if they are faster than the enemy, so if they rolled higher at the start, tough luck cause RNG affects everything about combat.


Combat Expanded
Since Combat is the main way to progress it makes sense that it has more than just hitting each other until one or more stop moving, this brings up the Emotion Levels. As combat goes on as you win or lose clashes you get emotion coins, Negative if you fail clashes or people on your team die, or positive if well the opposite happens.
These coins do various things, making it so your people can hold more light which is your resources to do attacks, and when they get up in emotion level regain all of there light, up to their new max per level up which goes up to a max of 5. Along with that during the game you'll get special Abnormality pages that give you buffs but there is two types, Breakdown Pages or Awakening Pages, each are represented by Negative and Positive emotion coins respectfully, meaning the coins you gained to the team's average emotion level will gain you the options of the emotion levels cards. There is 3 cards you can pick at a time for each level but they can be all Awakening, Breakdown, or a mix, all is dependent on if you got more positive coins or negative.


Status Effects
Though there is various other mechanics that I can talk about, I need to talk about an important one that being the various status effects that you will find can fight against which are pretty simple.

Bleed: Takes DMG equal to the stack when it rolls an offensive dice, then subtract 1/3 to the stack.

Burn: Takes DMG at the start of the scene, then subtract 1/3 of the stack.

Paralysis: Reduce the Min/Max range of the dice equal to the stack, can lower the Min to 1 but can't go lower, then subtract 1/3 of stack.

Fairy: Target takes DMG equal to the the stack whenever it rolls a dice, remove half the stack at the end of the scene.

Erosion: Target takes DMG to HP and Stagger Resist equal to the stack, removes 1 stack per scene.

All these below are removed at the end of the scene
Fragile: Increase DMG taken equal to the stack.

Feeble: Reduce the Min/Max of Offensive Dice by 1 per stack, can't be lower than 1.

Disarm: Reduce the Min/Max of Defense Dice by 1 per stack, can't be lower than 1.

Bind: Reduce the speed dice results by 1 per stack, can't be lower than 1.

Projection: Decrease amount of Damage taken by 1 per stack, can't be lowered than 1.

Strength: Increase the Min/Max range of Offensive Dice by 1 per stack.

Endurance: Increase the Min/Max range of Defense Dice by 1 per stack.

Haste: Increase the speed dice result by 1 per stack.



Music and Presentation
Easily the best part about this game, the art style is so smooth and clear yet had so much depth, though a simple card game the artwork for the background, cards, and people themselves are beautiful. The Music can only be described as perfect in my eyes, from grand works by Mili, and Studio EIM. There is about 80 tracks in the game and all of them are amazing, I'd put it up there with DMC and Ace Combat when it comes to the shear grandeur, even more so since higher your emotional level the more intense the music gets, there is 3 levels per stage and there is 10 floors, with there own themes, its...its completely insane but all of them are just amazing, I really can't praise them enough.



Story
Just like the music and presentation the story goes just as deep if not more that Lobotomy Corp, not only incorporating it but expanding on it even more. Though I don't want to spoiler much since the more blind you are to the story the stronger it is, and you don't need to play Lobotomy Corp to play Library Of Ruina but it does give you background information, the story though is dark and mysterious which fits perfectly with the setting that Project Moon set up.




Final Thoughts
As I kind of showed I am somewhat biased due to my hours invested and completing the game, but I am not biased enough to say that its completely perfect, the fight revolving around luck can be a pain and just some fights are painful, and the more grindy parts of the game with burning books but having to do the fight again either because you didn't get the book or enough books you want or getting more because you failed the fight but looking past that I'd still recommend it, even if you aren't a fan of card games give it a shot, its decently cheap and you'll find out quick if this is a game for you are not.

Feels kinda weird doing this, haven't gone in-depth with a review like this but due to the story I had to do one like this eventually and if its for Library of Ruina, I am okay with it.
