Honestly holds up incredibly well. Not much story to get connected to but plenty of raw non-stop combat. The different scenarios this expansion puts together are varied and almost all hits. I could have done without the tank mission, it was not very engaging at all, but on the other hand, the bomber crew member mission was brilliant, as was the whole British campaign.

If you're looking for good, challenging but straight forward historical FPS, United Offensive is still a great choice.

Pretty fun, relaxing game.

Pretty much a clicker game, but with elements of strategy and a lose state. The pixel art looks great.

I'd say my biggest criticism is the lack of explanation of certain game mechanics. It took me 2 playthroughs to recognize the "de-forestation" mechanic. After learning what was going on there, the whole game was a breeze. Regardless, I had a bunch of fun, beat the game in one sitting and for the low cost of $0 you really can't go wrong.

Alan Wake is a great game, first and foremost. It has a gripping story if you seek it out, fun gameplay though a bit easy, fantastic visuals that still hold up today, phenomenal voice acting, iconic soundtrack and chilling atmosphere. Before even offering any criticism I would recommend anybody who has not done so to give it a try.

With that said, one thing that has bothered me through all 3 of my playthroughs of Alan Wake is the delivery of the story. Most of it you will get organically, but you are going to miss bits and pieces if you don't actively seek out collectibles. In theory, this is fine. Plenty of other games have done this successfully. The problem with AW is that the collectibles, while mostly not terribly well hidden, have no method of "making them easier to find". Typically, a game like this, that hides plot points within hidden collectibles, will either give you a powerup or ability mid game that makes collectibles easier to find, or do so on a subsequent playthrough to allow you to go back and find them easier to patch up the missing pieces of plot you failed to find on your first playthrough. I think both of these are acceptable to varying degrees. What sucks is offering neither. Having to either pull up a guide or scavenge every last bit of every map and hope you don't miss a single collectible (especially during fast paced action sequences when you don't necessarily have that liberty) is neither intuitive or entertaining gameplay. For over a decade this has bothered me about AW, because it could have been essentially a perfect game, but this one glaring direction choice really puts a hamper on the experience for anyone who wants to be a story completionist. Hope you enjoy having a guide open on a second monitor or phone.

My only other gripe is that the game is far too easy and doesn't really offer an option to make it more difficult..... and the DLC suck complete ass (I played them on PS5).

Regardless of these gripes, I would whole heartedly recommend AW to anyone who is a fan of horror, abstract stories or well directed dramas with phenomenal acting.

With Just Cause 2 being one of my favorite games of all time, I was excited to finally try this out.

Unfortunately, all of what I love about Just Cause 2 is missing from this. The movement is incredibly boring and buggy, thanks in part to the awful physics. Run speed is horrendously slow, and the animation is laughably bad. Parachuting controls awful, it's hard to compare to anything but its just very loose and imprecise. The iconic zipline is designated to a 1 shot gun that you have to manually equip, removing ziplining and shooting at the same time. Not to mention, this also feels horrible. Once you attach to something, and by something I mean only vehicles since you can't attach to the environment; you zip in a straight line with no adjustments able to be made and no elevation gained.

The gunplay is okay, but that's just a nice way of saying it functions but is boring and doesn't do anything special. The vehicles control like hell. This may be because of running an old game on modern systems but half the time you're lucky to even get inside a vehicle without the physics bugging out. I've been launched off motorcycles after mounting them, car doors go flying off into space, passengers get sucked into a black hole and launched into a different dimension. It's both hilarious and incredibly annoying when you are actually trying to do something productive instead of creating a physical anomaly.

It's a shame because I was hoping more of the identity of Just Cause 2 would be present in this game, but it really feels like an underbaked prototype and considering the games that were releasing in 2006, I'm surprised this game did as well as it did at launch. I got it for under a dollar so I'd say I got my money's worth, but that dollar probably could have gone further on a more entertaining game.

Don't bother.

The story is untranslated, it's glitchy, the combat lacks fluidity and there just isn't much point in playing it unless you want to look up the main character's skirt.

If you're cool with using the hard drive space for that then I won't be the one to judge but fellas.... do better.

Condition Zero comes with 2 modules:
1. Condition Zero (CZ) - Provides a slightly different MP experience to that of CS1.6, mostly graphical changes with a few gameplay changes. Also has a player vs. bots singleplayer mode, which is essentially just multiplayer with bots instead of humans, but with added objectives to make it a bit more difficult.
2. Deleted Scenes - A scripted single player campaign similar to something you'd see in Quake or Unreal Tournament.

For simplicity's sake I'll go over the changes CZ introduces, just keep in mind this isn't something I've thoroughly researched or anything of the sort, just what I know from playing multiple versions of CS for around a decade now. If you don't know the core gameplay of Counter Strike to understand these changes... well then go buy 1.6 and then consider picking up CZ.

Changes
  • Lighting - Lighting is updated to be more smooth and natural, shadows and darkness is generally not as harsh and saturation looks much more natural, in my opinion this is a good change both aesthetically and gameplay wise, excluding the saturation change. I would prefer deeper saturation to make things easier to see and more colorful. You can somewhat counteract this by using a setting called digital vibrance in the NVidia control panel. If you have an AMD card they have a similar setting, though I do not know what it is called.
  • Gun Models - Gun models are updated to look more realistic and metallic, most have changed color palettes or just added color in general and a select few have new animation, mostly just moving parts, for instance the bolt on the FAMAS/Clarion now moves when firing. Also the knife has a new animation which I think looks awful. Overall this is a positive change though.
  • Character Models - Character models are completely changed. They are higher resolution but in my opinion the new models look lame in comparison to the 1.6 models.
  • Textures - Pretty much every texture on the maps have been changed and made higher resolution. For the most part the changes are welcome to me, though they do effect the visual feel of the maps a little. I think I'd consider this a positive change.

Outside of the additions I mentioned at the beginning of the review, that's really the extent of the changes. Mostly all visual changes.

So the question is... do these changes warrant a purchase? Not in the slightest. For various reasons, if you're buying this for multiplayer, you're better off just playing 1.6.

In my eyes, the only reason to pick up CZ is for the Deleted Scenes. However I don't believe Deleted Scenes is actually worth the $10 CZ goes for.

Basically the campaign is a collection of missions with no overarching story or really anything of interest in the way of plot. They are all linear. They take place in different locales around the world. They are all played on the CT side, although the factions will differ. They offer a very small amount of puzzle solving. They have boss fights. They have forced stealth sections.

Here is what I dislike about Deleted Scenes:
  • Linear as hell, wouldn't be a problem if it didn't give you the illusion of choice with multiple hallways and doors just leading to dead ends, often without an item reward.
  • Secrets are hidden pretty lazily and without thought, even when you go out of your way to look for them you probably won't find a majority of them, and when you do find them, they are mostly useless.
  • Enemy placement has very little thought, often times they are placed in dark corners or closed doors. If they are placed somewhere that requires a scripted animation, they are completely invincible until the animation plays out.
  • Boss battles are awful, all of them but the final 2 bosses are insanely easy. The 2nd to last boss is just a bullet sponge that can take literally several AK clips to the head and numerous grenades before he dies, but he can kill you just as quick as any other enemy, not to mention he's surrounded by 2 shot kill snipers AND you are on a timelimit to kill him. Just awful. The last boss is actually pretty good and a satisfying finale, but he also has 2 bullet sponge troops that will kick your ass if you don't cheese them somehow.
  • The game is incredibly easy, even on hard. The only time I was challenged was the aforementioned bosses and when I had to escort the retarded AI.
  • Escorting AI is just plain awful.
  • The most fun guns run out of ammo quickly.
  • You can get trapped by AI very easily.
  • Some puzzles are very difficult not because they require you to use your brain but rather because they require you to go around knifing random things (MULTIPLE TIMES) until something breaks, and it's rarely obvious what you should be attacking.
  • Allied AI is useless
  • Enemy AI is braindead. Most of the time they just stand in one spot and shoot at you, never trying to get to a better position.
  • The forced stealth is AWFUL. It's dreadfully boring and boils down to crouching behind a box, waiting for enemy to turn back, moving to next box, waiting for enemy to turn back, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, over and over again and it always left me wanting to just quit playing it was so boring and uninspired. More guns, less sneaking. PLEASE.

With that said, I think Deleted Scenes is a fairly average FPS when it's at it's best. When at it's worst it is just plain bad. Unless you're a die hard CS fan that wants to experience it, there are so many other games to spend your time and money on.

Oh and I didn't even mention the fact that this came out in 2004. Half Life 2 came out 7 months after this. Take a second to think about that.

I am recommending this solely because it's free, and might be a more "enjoyable" experience for others.

As for my experience, the "game" did nothing for me. Half the story relies on shock factor. I was not shocked nor emotionally moved in any way by this. Maybe I'm desensitized, or maybe it was too simple to warrant a reaction out of me. As for the other half of the game, it tries to paint a picture (literally) of a person in mental decline. It deals with obsession, hallucination, depression and a few other things. In theory it is a cool idea. But the "game" took me 10 minutes to complete, and that is with reading and taking in every little bit of information I could. 10 minutes is not enough time to even brush the surface of one these mental illnesses, let alone all of them present. The most prominent one is obsession, in fact almost all of the game revolves around it. Yet all that the obsession lead to was the setup of the "game", it had nothing to do with even the ending of the "game". It really makes the whole experience seem like wasted potential. To top it off, the "ending" of the game facades as a continued look into these mental illnesses, but it's all a tease and simply ends in a slap to the face.

I also ran into some technical issues which aren't really that big of a deal for a 10 minute "game", but they should be made known regardless. Firstly, the game stutters. Bad. I'm not talking about low FPS, I'm talking about the type of stutter you would see in a game such as Oblivion. I'm used to playing on a 144hz 120+FPS monitor and setup, so when something looks sluggish or stutters, it's abundantly noticeable and distracting to me. Some people may not even notice it, but if you're prone to being annoyed by the kind of thing, be aware that as of writing this it is present in the game. Secondly, and the worst offense in my opinion (albeit one that might happen to a very small group of people) is that the game has no option in the menu to set mouse sensitivity, and the default one is absurdly high. Even on the lowest dpi setting my mouse supports (400) moving the mouse just 1 inch resulted in performing a 360. Needless to say it got annoying quickly.

I'm sure some people will find it to be an interesting experience (and many people do), but I didn't enjoy this "game" very much at all.

Very minimalistic gameplay and a very predictable end. It's basically Dear Esther minus the interesting story to be told and beautiful art design + graphics.

I don't see how I'm supposed to be emotionally effected when I seen the outcome form a mile away. Unfortunately, was a waste of my 5 minutes.

Not to mention it crashed upon returning to the main menu after the ending.

Was a pretty decent experience albeit short. Didn't take very long to beat after I identified my errors on my first loss, maybe 25 minutes total. Not much to do, it's basically a walk through a haunted house, except it's a forest. No interaction, no goal, no backstory. Just you, your flashflight and a forest to get to the end of. The "antagonist" is a bit cheap, so as a gameplay mechanic it doesn't really work that well, it's really easy to avoid the "antagonist" once you know what to do as well, making the replay value pretty much non-existent. The majority of the scares are going to be auditory, the background noise and "music" are very chilling. Other than the failure screen there were very, very few jumpscares, however they are all really well done when present, albeit a bit predictable. One of them was also very subtle and gave more of a chill down my spine rather than a straight up jump, which I appreciated as those types of scares are a rarity in horror games these days. Oh and ♥♥♥♥. THAT. JUMPSCARE. The one right around the 3/4 through point. If you play it you know what I'm talking about. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that nearly gave me heart failure. I was playing with a friend too which should have made the game less scary but we both just about shat ourselves right there. The worst part was I was prepared for it, looking in the direction of it and everything. Almost had to buy a new mouse cause I sent it flying off my desk.

Overall though, if you want to play a quick, generic but well done horror game, this isn't a bad choice. I normally prefer slow burning existential horror but this definitely entertained me the entire play session.
