Guts (ガッツ, Gattsu) is the main protagonist of the manga and anime Berserk. He is a formidable mercenary known as the Black Swordsman, wielding a massive blade known as the Dragonslayer. Formerly a member of the Band of the Hawk, he was Griffith’s right-hand man before being betrayed in the Eclipse, which left him cursed and seeking vengeance against Griffith and the demonic God Hand.

Guts is a towering and muscular warrior with a battle-hardened physique covered in numerous scars from years of combat. He has short, spiky black hair and a single eye, as his right eye was lost during the Eclipse. His most distinguishing feature is the Brand of Sacrifice on his neck, marking him as prey for demonic beings.
His attire consists of dark, heavy armor, which later evolves into the Berserker Armor—a cursed suit of armor that grants him immense strength at the cost of his body’s well-being. He wears a long, tattered cape and wields a massive prosthetic left arm with a built-in cannon and crossbow. His iconic weapon, the Dragonslayer, is a massive slab of iron capable of cleaving through both human and supernatural foes with ease.

Guts is a hardened warrior shaped by a lifetime of suffering, yet beneath his rough exterior lies a deeply complex character. Initially, he is reserved, cynical, and fiercely independent, having grown up as a lone mercenary. However, during his time with the Band of the Hawk, he forms strong bonds with its members, particularly Griffith and Casca. Following the Eclipse, Guts is consumed by rage and vengeance, hunting apostles relentlessly. His trauma often isolates him, but as he travels with new companions such as Puck, Isidro, and Farnese, he slowly begins to rediscover his humanity. Despite his brutal nature in battle, he has a strong sense of justice and protects those who cannot defend themselves. At his core, Guts is a survivor—someone who refuses to be broken, no matter how much suffering he endures. His journey is one of struggle, revenge, and ultimately, the search for purpose beyond violence.
