Ok, now that I have more than twenty hours in the game, I can do a far more intense review. Unfortunately, even after playing, I can't recommend the game right now.

I had the worst game ever on my first play and I was so angry at Firaxis for delivering such a poor iteration. Marathon was so bugged that I really didn't like my first run, but it gets a little bit better (but you will see that it is not enough).

There are good things in the game, but there are a lot of flaws and things that fall terribly flat.

I will begin with the good:

- The graphics are good and enjoyable.

- The music is good too.

- The feeling is still there when you are in an age that you enjoy; the "one more turn" effect is still present.

But... there are so many flaws right now... so many.

UI
This is the worst UI ever, and it affects not only the gameplay but how you enjoy the game.

Some examples:

- When you replace a building somewhere, you have no idea of the stats you will lose. Example : You will have a building that make +5 in food, the game will advice to replace by a building that make +6 in science without hesitating... And to see that you have to go in another part of the UI.

- When you want to convert a city to your religion, you have no idea which district you have to convert. You have to convert the main spot and another districts without any info....

- When you want to move a resource, you have to select and click, no drag and drop. The UI is made for a gamepad, not for PC.

- When you create a merchant, you don't have any clue on how it's work. You have to move your merchant to the place and push another button.

The UI has not been made for PC but for console, and everything is designed with that in mind. No info when you mouseover, everything is hidden behind mechanics that nobody understands, and even the civilopedia is dull.

This is the first time in a Civ game that I have to go to the civilopedia; before, it was only when I wanted to go deeper. Here, it's for simple concepts that are too obscure to understand... This is bad, really, really bad.

Era
Changing an era will reset a lot of things, and you will lose a lot of things.

- The settler or similar (like missionnary) disappears

- The wonder can't be completed after the era ends (they simply can't be done since changing an era change the tech), and if you started one and didn't finish in time, it disappears.

- Every unit will disappear or magically appear to "balance things"

- You will change civilization of course

- If you don't have the economic golden age, your city will become a town again.

Fundamentally, okay, they have done that to balance the game, but that has a lot of effects on me:

- Immersion is gone because I feel like I have restarted a game.

- You have the feeling that somebody played for you, like if I go to the bathroom during a chess game and when I come back, the other player tells me that he played for me. This is exactly the same feeling.

- You lose the feeling that everything is done by you.

- You lose attachment to the game.

Depending on the era, you will confront other problems. You don't like exploration or don't want to make a settlement outside your continent because you don't have any room for cities, you're stuck. You were at war in the previous age and already maxed out your cities (generally in some game i had 2 or 3 cities more than the limit because the AI are more aggressive) and more, you're stuck. You will find the exploration age flat because you will not make the same progress as in antiquity. The same problem occurs in the modern age but in a different way.

General Thoughts
For me, this is the biggest issue with this new Civilization. The game feels flat in many aspects. The game has been simplified in many ways. No builder, instead, you build with city growth. Why not, but fundamentally, this doesn't remove micromanagement. In fact, it is the same thing except that now you are far more limited in your strategy. It's the same for the victory condition or the quest during the ages. Every aspect on the game are just here to force you in a kind of gameplay... Far less freedom, far less strategy, a bad UI, that's why the game falls flat....

Just some things that i have in mind on what i miss :

- No more exchange in diplomacy. You can't exchange map, artefact nothing and that's very sad. Yes the influence point is good but not that good to remove all of this
- No more builder for no reason because the city growth is exactly the same system but more restricted
- No more auto explore for unit
- No hotseat to play with my children (i have the founder edtiion, i almost feel scam for that, my child can't play with me)
- No modern age or even industrialisation age. This is clearly missing for me. You jump too much between the ages
- And you can't rename your city, that with the fact that you lose control during age transition is a main feature.......

When the UI will be fixed, when they will add content during ages and possibility reducing the feeling that the game is just too flat, when they will fix the lose of immersion during age transition (or remove it purely and simply but i don't think this is possible) then yes the game will have a lot of potential but right now, this is just flat.

Civilization was a sandbox game, and it seems with this new iteration that they have restricted the gameplay more and more. I hope that the game will improve because I love the series. But right now, the price is clearly too expensive to recommend it.

In short, right now, the game falls flat. There is still the "one more turn" effect, and sometimes you have some momentum that gives you the old Civilization feels, but the UI is outrageous. The era change and the reset can affect your immersion. You don't feel that you own your game, but that you're following the developer's will. There is no modern age; the game ends at the cold war, and it feels insufficient—too flat, too simplified, and with too many things removed.

A side note on the AI, that is too aggressive and put city where it make nonsense, just to take the space... A bit ridiculous and annoying...

Apart from that and on a side note, the DLCs are really too expensive. I hope that Firaxis will do better. I'm still loving the game in some aspects, but clearly right now, for a player that has been playing since the first Civ, I'm just sad.

Beware, this game is a pay to win. They try to convince you that this is not the case but putting card gameplay behind a paywall and a roulette game is the definition of a pay to win game.

I played a lot at this game since the release, i love it but the season pass only give you the right to play roulette game....

They really need to put only comestic behind all of this or if they really want to add card in the season pass, remove the collection cache principle...
