Terraria

Terraria is a 2D, platformer, sandbox game. The idea being that they place you in the "16 bit" world and your goal is to survive. The game becomes fairly easy to understand and thus fun is insured.

Story (Positives)

The story of terraria is...

There is no story. Your goal is to simply survive in the fantasy world that is very similar to earth. Defend yourself from the threats of the environment, craft and create new materials, and enjoy finding the mysteries of this world. With a simplistic idea as this you can any where. From a realism survival game such as The Forest, or to the extreme opposites such as Grand Theft Auto V(given we are talking about the sandbox part of the game). This keeps the game exciting because there a mysteries to be explored and found out by the gamer.

Story (Negatives)

Lots of games today are compelled by a fantastic story, excellent scripting, and grade A voice acting. Terraria lacks all of these, which is somewhat okay for it being a sandbox. But people looking for game where they have a plot, or reasoning, won't be pleased by this.

Graphics and Sound (Positive)

Let me first say this, good graphics doesn't necessarily mean the next Crysis 3, or creativity as Limbo, but a game can have charming and appropriate graphics. Being a 2D platformer in 2011 would expect something equivalent to Super Mario Land 2.1, but they go on the whole opposite side of the spectrum. When asked to describe the graphics I would say imagine 16 bit Mario games you played as a kid, but better looking with more color. Sounds pretty bad in today's age but it matches the game so well. It keeps things basic in this extremely complex world. I'm not saying the graphics are 16 bit, cause they are a much higher resolution, but they resemble them. It has a certain charm which makes the game unforgettable. The music also has this charm in which you can turn on the ambient, music, and sound. It fits and matches the situations you are in. Like the graphics not being triple A, the music is chosen perfectly which can make or break a game for people.

Graphics and sound (Negative)

For those looking for triple A graphics from publishers like Bethesda and DICE, you will be disappointed. But for how unique this game looks, you can't really go wrong. The sound of other things besides music in the game is average.

Gameplay (Positive)

While the game seems to be lacking in the story and graphics, the gameplay nearly instantly makes up for this. The idea being, kill this, mine that, fight that boss, find this, do that... Wash rinse and repeat sounds boring, bland, and uninteresting. But what changes this from bland to interesting is the abundance of items/blocks, unique biomes, and challenging bosses/enemies. When you get in the game you crave for the next ore, next item, and more money. Understanding the game at the beginning is fairly basic and most gamers would enjoy to play this. Even to introduce people to video games they would be able to understand. The mobs of enemies and difficult bosses make you feel accomplished when you get that next upgrade of armor or weapons. You feel as if you have gotten stronger and progression is made. It's almost ridiculous how fun this grind is. The replay ability of small scale situations in the game is very high, but the large scale is average. If asked to play this game again after around 3 months of beating it, I probably would.

Gameplay (Negative)

I mentioned how most people would be able to grab this game and start playing, but the problem that it runs into is that it has so much content that it can get confusing to a point of not knowing where to go. With having thousands of items and hours of hours of gameplay available, where do you go, how do you craft that, where is that boss? Late game you will find yourself on Terraria Wiki searching for what to do next and what does the next damage instead of naturally funding it /searching for it.

Verdict

Costing under $10, it's practically a free game. The amount of hours/fun you can have on this game makes it a must buy.

Bonus: I didn't review multiplayer and single player because the game on multiplayer plays like the single player, pretty much making it seem like a co-op.
