The most innovative take on a skill ceiling approach first-person shooter game I've played. The combat is fast and simple-yet offer depth of mastery that distinguished itself from other high skill fps games.

The design of certain enemy like the Marauder halts the flow of combat--yet his attacks remain fast paced, throwing you off the combat rhythm whenever you get too comfortable. The design of the new enemies still tries to follow the disruption of combat rhythm philosophy of the Marauder, but for the wrong reason. The Stone Imps are harasser types that rolls around knocking your aim that can only be meaningfully damaged by a specific weapon mod. The Armored Baron is a brawler type that's immune to all damage but this specific weapon mod, unless you pay attention to it when it does its green attack. The Blood Maykrs are harasser types that are outright immune until it does its green attack.

Whilst there is an argument that "the Marauder also follows this red light, green light damage window, then why is it now a bad thing?", the problem becomes when every new demon introduced tries to be "the new marauder" from harasser fodder types all the way to minibosses and outright final bosses too. The Marauder has the delivery in-lore as this "another you, but a demon", and has the combat potential to outright kill you in a 1-1, thus merit from paying your attention to its presence. The Stone Imps are just that-an Imp with outrageous damage resist that occasionally bumps you around, the Armored Baron is just a Baron with a "red light, green light" attack to open damage window, and the Blood Maykrs are long range harasser that's more of an annoyance as you wait for it to finally do an attack.

As closure, Doom Eternal offers a game that you can just "get in the zone" with its simple combat, yet offers depth of mastery to last you hundreds of hours of satisfaction. The trend in enemy design that stalls the combat rhythm may, in my opinion, dilutes the enemy variety too much and ultimately changes the game from this fast-paced, quake battle arena to a game of waiting the enemy to do their funny attack.

Playing this for hundreds of hours, i've come to acceptance that the Diplomation AI is so bad, defending your civ against Shaka who has eliminated 3 other civs will brand YOU as a warmonger among the other remaining civs. Friendly civs will also hate your guts if you as slightly as not help their demands or babysit their city states. It is just better to play aggressive early and pile your army near another civ's borders to demand tribute and turn them into "Afraid" state than "Friendly".

If this doesn't bother you however, this is by far the best timesink game out there to relax and have a good evening. The best experience i've had from playing this game is figuring out how things work as a new player and try not to mind how the AI works.
