Lethal Company is a game which continues to have a trick up its sleeve, even after so many hours of gameplay. It is a completely simple game - there's a half dozen maps or so with a dozen enemies or so within a randomly generated dungeon, and it's your job to collect one of a couple dozen different pieces of scrap to sell to a company. Any lesser game would have this process be a chore, but instead it's thrilling, wherein the simple act of navigation is never the same on any two days. This is a rare game where the nature of the randomly generated environment places the AI of the monsters at a permanent, unassailable advantage over you. Accordingly, you feel small against the elements - and when isolated from your peers, genuinely uneasy.

This is a horror game - and make no mistake, it will scare and perhaps even disturb you - but it does so impressively without ever seeming tacky or grotesque. It all comes topped with a simple set of controls, robust multiplayer interface over steam, and the best execution of range-based voice chat ever implemented in a computer game. The sound design is pitch-perfect and the music superbly evokes nostalgia of a paradise lost on every planet -- accentuated by dreamlike PS1-style screen graphics. The result is a game that continues to surprise, delight, and disturb after nearly 60 hours. Lethal Company is utterly charming and has an atmosphere unmatched by any of its peers. Surely a must-play PC title and a landmark of its genre.
