TLDR; Congrats - You had a great game, then locked it behind a subscription. It hurts me to say, don't touch this game at the moment.

TribeXR is, in essence, a DJ simulator, their partnership with AlphaTheta (PioneerDJ) has allowed them to model in incredible detail, a high end set of CDJ300s with a DJM900 Nexus 2. For all you bedroom DJs out there, this club setup would cost upwards of $7000. For what was a $25 game, this allowed you to interact with a virtual model of this equipment, loading songs into a virtual DJ deck, and mixing between them. Personally, I used this game to help me transition from using a physical controller with a laptop to using the real club equipment.

While modeled in incredibly high detail, is important to note that there is naturally a large gap between the virtual and physical hardware. The CDJ's don't have a functioning menu system, not every knob and button is intractable, there are no cables. While I agree with why this has been done, it is important to note, as the game is able to teach you how to use DJ equipment, not necessarily understand it. This only comes into play when transitioning from virtual to physical hardware, eg: you could be sitting there for 5 minutes trying to figure out why your ProDJ link inst working, and its because an IP hasn't been correctly assigned, or your cables aren't plugged in. Again its important to note this isn't a gripe at the game, it's just something to note, the game teaches you a lot, but not everything. Furthermore, It is sometimes difficult to use buttons and faders. Physical hardware, for example allows for a button to be pressed in many ways. Think, you could lock your finger, wrist and elbow and use your shoulder to 'press' the button, you could use your elbow, or your wrist, you get the idea. In real life we use a combination of muscles and joints to interact with something, in VR, buttons are pressed using a trigger, using only your finger. This system as a whole is a hardware limitation, not a fault with the game, but again, I deem it important to note as you get so immersed in this game that it can be difficult to get accustom to this new way of controlling DJ Decks.

The game is easy to learn and offers a lot to enjoy. Just note, there is no campaign, no missions, nothing like that. It is as simple as, Launch game, Choose some tracks, mix. Personally, I love this, but you will only enjoy the game if this description sounds like fun. Entertainment goes up exponentially when you start using the multiplayer rooms feature. This allows others (strangers of friends depending on the privacy level) to join you in the booth as a punter, or as another DJ. This is the best part of the game in my opinion, Myself and a friend spent close to 5 hours performing a set to ourselves and a couple of mates. We laughed, we cried, but we certainly had a great time. We even hooked up Resolume, a visuals software used on the biggest stages in the world, and had one of our mates perform visuals for us. It was a great night.

This review focuses on Two pieces of hardware, the CDJ and The DJM. Tribe also has a whole host of other equipment for you to use, from midi controllers, to vinyl decks, it has some hardware for every type of DJ.

So, the review has been positive thus far, It sounds like a great game. So, why is it shrouded in a red glow. Well, as of today, I can no longer recommend the game. The game has become free to play, but with 95% of the content that was included in the $25 price tag being locked behind a new subscription model. I would consider myself lucky, as I seemingly get to keep all the content that I originally had when I purchased the game. But new players will be forced to buy a subscription to enjoy the game as I have described it in this review. I am against subscriptions anyway, I allow it for services where i am getting fed new content consistently, eg Netflix, Spotify, etc, But this game does not fall under that bracket. I am not alone in my feelings. The game has dropped to Mixed recent reviews in just a few days due to this change. It is saddening as I have preached this game for a while, but will be unable to continue with that.

Devs: I am genuinely sorry. I doubt this decision came from you guys. You have made a great game, I would go as far to say that it isn't even a game and is an actual simulator. This is the first game that I have felt sad about giving a negative review. I genuinely love the game. I just can no longer recommend it. I do hope the pricing model reverts back when the dust settles.

A lot of fun, similar to the original with enough to make it different.
