Brutal and uncompromising. Essential playing for anyone who likes falling in the mud while fighting, then dying of infected cuts shortly afterwards.

At best Mirror's Edge is fast paced and brilliantly exciting. Leaping across buildings, sliding and rolling through a beatifully stylised city, the parkour can be fast and fluid with a real sense of freedom. Dodging bullets and racing through buildings, disarming guards and finding quiet moments by sneaking through air vents is all great fun. For odd bursts of thirty seconds or so, this game is brilliant.

Then you find a jump which is just too pixel-perfect and takes thirty tries to get right, or the slightly awkward combat and inconsistent level design keeps getting you killed, or despite the hint system it simply isn't obvious where to go next or how. As well as being frustrating in themselves, these events break up the pace of the game and take the shine off the best parts.

If it were consistent, this would be one of the best games ever made. As it is, it is a variable experience which is superb in parts and well worth playing overall.
