Paradox Interactive must've been very shocked to find out that their fans expected Victoria 3 to *be a sequel to Victoria 2*, but that seems to be more or less what the 'problem' about Victoria 3 is. Every time Paradox has made a sequel in the grand timeline series, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, they've always felt like a more polished, expanded-upon version of their game previous.

Victoria 3, however, plays nothing like Victoria 2. If you want a remake of Victoria 2 with expanded mechanics, you're better off scrounging for a Vic 2 mod you haven't sunk 200 hours in already.

The main gameplay loop is essentially finding weak points in your economy, deficits or excessive surpluses, and either building or trading for those resources, and then responding to changes in the economy. The Victoria 2 economy was an astonishing, confusing accomplishment but to most people it was secondary to any one of research, diplomacy, or military tactics at most points of the game. In Victoria 3 it's what you spend most of the game thinking about, or more precisely, most of what you'll be doing in Victoria 3 is reliant upon your economy needing to agree.

The military system is barebones. It reduces war into a set of fronts with generals attached, which play out like singular battles in CK3.

Diplomacy, colonies, and internal politics are way more interesting than they've ever been. The politics system is maybe the most recognizable part of the game when it comes to being a sequel to Vic 2. Choosing political parties to support, changing laws to fit a changing, growing population, and dealing with dissidents when they dont get what they want, etc. It's well made, and provides a lot of the intrigue of the game.

I can't play this game more than a few hours at a time, because I end up feeling like working an economy in Vic 3 is as stressful and manual as running a business's ledger, and so I should really be getting payed to do that.

Do I recommend this game? The big blue thumb on the review says yes, but the parts of my mind that have screen burn from 2,000 hours of Victoria 2 say big red thumb.

I enjoyed the free weekend. I suggest extending it by "receiving an offline version of the product for free", which is where the extra hundred or so unlogged hours I have in the game are. As much as there's 50 bucks worth of game here, I'd be livid if I paid 50 bucks for this.
