An underappreciated game that kinda flew under the radar, The Surge is a souls-like game with grindy progression. The surge is not for everybody, in the sense that the gameplay is hard and unforgiving, just a couple mistakes (sometimes only one) and you're back to square one. While you can't customize your character, there is a plethora of armor and weapons for you to use and upgrade, each with their own categories and quirks. I would recommend The Surge to anyone looking for a good twist on a souls game with some challenge. If you come into this game expecting a laid back casual experience and in-depth story to be engrossed in, you will be sorely disappointed. In my opinion the combat system is fun and engaging, and as for the grind it can be brutal in some areas but I still found it enjoyable. Plenty of upgrades and pickups are scattered for you to find while exploring the maze-like maps, which is where it can also start to get frustrating. You will find a lot of locked doors and entrances that can't be unlocked until later, some enemies will catch you offguard jumping to attack you from a doorway or direction out of sight not giving you enough time to react, some poorly placed jumps will lead to your doom, and most of the sidequests are kinda bs "help me find this" with zero indication on what or where you're supposed to go. Overall though a great experience with enough replay value to keep me hype for The Surge 2, the nitpicks and frustrations I experienced can be overlooked as learning experiences for when I had to run back through an area after death lol.

TLDR: solid graphics, solid combat, solid aesthetic, poor side quests, and it couldve been a little longer/had a couple more bosses

OH and there's a fair amount of backtracking but don't worry there are shortcuts you can discover
