This game is a good roguelike successor to left 4 dead, at first it may seem difficult and much harder than l4d, and that's true. There's 3 difficulties, recruit which is normal, veteran which is hard, and nightmare which is nigh-impossible. As someone who plays nightmare and beat the game on recruit and veteran, I recommend starting on recruit, and not on veteran, to get a grasp on the game, and getting good cards through supply points to build a deck. Decks are key to this game, and the order and composition of those cards matter.
Don't listen to the bad reviews, they usually criticize the game's difficulty or the fact that there is no solo progression (i.e. you don't get supply points from playing anything in the game solo, but the thing is, you have all cards in solo, so only cosmetics are the things you'd yearn for.) Take your time to learn the game, it doesn't happen all at once and there are plenty of neat tricks that will definitely propel you forward. Just know that in higher difficulties, movement speed is in fact necessary, as you are not too tanky and can't take hits as often. While there are bugs in the game, the devs acknowledge this, and it will only get better with time. For now, don't control bots at the end of a map, you will get a checkpoint and complete the mission, but you won't get achievement progress.

Edit: The devs have changed alot about this game in their newest winter update. Nightmare and other difficulties all around have become easier, and as a result the game is at least more entertaining to play in my opinion, while nightmare still serves a challange, it is less unbalanced. Slow and steady builds are now more favorable, instead of full kiting/dodging builds. This is a good sign, as the developers are receptive to what players say and want in their community.
