Early Access Review
Witchfire is a refreshing take on the Extraction shooter format with some unique innovations and an interesting world full of Catholic, Dark Fantasy, and occult imagery. Think of it as a blend between The Dark Tower, Tarkov, Destiny, and the exorcist. While I do recommend the game, that is mostly because of the promise that it has in its current state of early access. In my opinion if this was a full release, it would not be worth half the current asking price.

In Witchfire you play as the most Elite example of the Vatican's biggest necessary Evil in her fight against the Witches; the Preyer. Preyers are men who committed unspeakable sins and now have magical powers, and are now deformed and nearly immortal. You kill enemies to earn the Game's titular currency "Witchfire" which you must spend to unlock certain aspects of gameplay, and to level up. The gameplay loop is simple, you choose a location to "expedition" to. You shoot enemies, collect witchfire, unlock "arcana" that affects your current run's gameplay (think perks from CoD), move on to objectives, kill enemies, collect witchfire, loot treasure, enter portal, and repeat. Gun play is fun and satisfying and the game is incredibly fun in quick 10-30 minute long sessions.

While the game is fun, its issues are glaring. There are only 3 maps, spell and weapon variety are lacking, often increased difficulty just means MORE enemies rather than any real challenge, TTK on enemies can be incredibly high, the health economy is broken, "Classes" are more like starter packs, and lack of content.

Let's hit these points:

- Maps
There are only 3 maps, and while they are fun to look at, their layout doesn't make for creative firefights. The maps feel like they're meant to be traversed rather than fought on. Because you revisit them so often in longer sessions it can get dull.

- Weps + Spells
Weapons and Spells are limited. You're allowed to choose 1 Demon (power) weapon of which only 3 are available, you're allowed to choose 2 weapons of which there are 14 available across 4 categories. Due to the Nature of the game there is a clear meta with only a handful of guns being viable. You can complete challenges by using the gun to upgrade the gun. There is less than 10 of each spell available.

- Difficulty
The game is challenging, that's what makes it fun. However, your most common deaths will often just be BS spawns. You'll be doing just great in a firefight only for 20 enemies who slow you down with their attacks randomly spawn behind you all at once. Progression in the game causes more enemies to spawn as well. TTK on most enemies is annoying, even basic enemies can take an entire mag at higher levels, and most of a mag on lower levels.

- Health Economy

Health is important in any rogue lite. However, upgrading your health does little, and healing takes forever. Because of the limited nature of the healing elixirs, one of the game's items becomes the de facto meta because of how much it enhances healing elixirs.

- Classes

Classes only determine your starting stats and Weapon. You get nothing extra by picking another class, leaving little reason for replay.

- Content

There's just a lack of content in the game. The story is phenomenal but is only spoon fed to you in tiny little bits. The maps are good looking but levels must be replayed constantly to invest in your character to advance. Gnosis (the primary angle in which to advance and unlock new content) punishes less skilled players by making the game even harder. Missions range from fetch quests, to the same level over and over again.

We need new content to keep this game going.

In short? I like it, mechanically it is one of the best done CRPGs ever made, if not the greatest of all time. The only issues with this game lie in the story telling and character development. It's clear that Larian has favorites and a clearly enthusiastic and jovial attitude towards certain mature topics especially in regards to romance, intimacy, and physical relationships. Almost none of the characters you can have as party members are particularly likeable. I've opted to kill Astarion and Halsin in every playthrough simply because they're little more than either token edgelords and the stereotypical hornt bard(Druide). Halsin ends up being super creepy for most of the end game. Yes I know that if you put time into Astarion that he has a decent character arc, but most of your crew end up being pretty unlikeable. It's a shame because the characters who aren't edgelords have incredibly shallow backstories and character development. The story of the game also isn't super compelling as well.

However? The gameplay is 2nd to none, it's incredibly fun and well polished and fleshed out and I can't wait til they drop DLC or modders make campaigns half as good as this.

This game lets every millennial live out their wildest s3xal fantasies, such as owning a home and property, living in a walkable community that is flourishing, working a job that is fulfilling and well compensated, and being in a loving relationship.

I want to like this product, I really do, and it is with a heavy heart that I have to not recommend this product.

The game is great, if you're looking for a fun, fast paced shooter with a small learning curve, this is it.

However, the game in its current state isn't worth the price of admission. They've essentially released a half baked halo game. It's missing tons of core features, and is a blatant cash grab.

You shouldn't pay $14.99 for horse armor, and you shouldn't pay $15 for an eagle and keychain for your AR.

The campaign doesn't feel like a halo campaign. It feels like someone made a half attempt at an open world.

The game is missing many core features that have sense embedded themselves in Halo's DNA. Custom games are lacking because Forge is gone. Campaign is lacking, because Co-op is non existent. Firefight isn't a thing. Half of the game modes we loved are not a thing in here.

It feels like an early access title. There are like maybe 5 maps.

You know that one girl you dated in college? You know the one, the one who wasn't the prettiest, rarely wore makeup, and barely put an effort into her appearance? Yet she was fun as all can be, a freak in the sheets, and had a heart of gold and an amazing personality?

This is not that girl!

This game is basically digital opiates.

Welcome to mount and blade warband, where I've played over 360 hours and have yet to fully beat the game (legitimately at least).

Sound design is trash, story is non-existent, dialogue is meh at best and atrocious at worst. Graphics look like something an adderalled up 9 year old threw together in a roblox game in 2011.

So why do I love this game like the digital crack that it is?

The gameplay is simple yet, addictive. Do quest, get money, buy merchandise, fight bandits, get troops, form army, become mercenary.

Yet it's so freeing.

It's a sandbox game where you can do as little or as much as you wish, as long as you're cool with occasionally cutting down some baddies from time to time.

I've played as a mercenary, a trader, and a noble. I've had fun every single time. This game, per dollar per hour spent has been one of my best purchases, and the ease of access and availability of mods and DLC can easily make a quick purchase into a multi thousand hour game, and that's without touching this game's multiplayer.

I played this game for about 10 hours straight by accident and ended up having to come work a 12 hour shift with no sleep.

The game is quite fun, if a bit grindy.

The writing and storytelling is a bit lack luster, but we are getting free updates so I expect it to get better with time and age.

The UI is a little lacking.

However, the gameplay overall is fun, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
