Whilst I do recall this being a very fun game to play, I unfortunately cannot recommend anyone purchase this at any price. The reason for this being that the game requires a uPlay login, which now seems to be entirely discontinued, rendering the game effectively unplayable. If anyone has found a work-around, I would be more than grateful if you could share.

Despite being set in the same universe as Welcome to the Game, core gameplay elements from the previous entries are completely absent. Instead, the game is more or less a copy of Observation Duty with some interruptions as a means to introduce jump scares. If you somehow enjoyed Observation Duty, buy it. If you were expecting WTTG, steer clear. As a side note, this game is not particularly well optimized, and does not work well on weird screen resolutions such as my own (2560x1080). I fixed the latter by playing in windowed 1920x1080.

Early Access Review
As a disclaimer, I have been online friends with the developer since childhood. That being said, I still bought this game with my own money at full price, and believe I am judging the experience through an unbiased lens.
In it's simplest terms, I would describe core game play elements to be reminiscent of the combat from the Civilization series. Turn based, certain units do more or less damage to others depending on unit and terrain fought in - not particularly complex as far as strategy games go, but still enjoyable.
The campaign features challenging levels which are fun to play through and explore, and satisfying to complete. The soundtrack is also brilliantly put together and compliments every aspect of the game incredibly.
Though the campaign may be on the shorter side (for the time being), the game also features a skirmish mode with maps that are randomly generated. The skirmish mode offers a lot of customization on the user's own part, to the point I believe this may go against the game. The HUD and menus need improvement, and the options when making custom game modes are sometimes a bit vague, which makes it a bit overwhelming to view as a new player.
The individual races (to the game's credit, there is a warning many aren't fully fleshed out) are also a bit immense, with not much in the way to separate each race from one another, nor to determine what immediately makes a race unique. While many of the units do feature unique and memorable unit portraits, the 3D model representations lack enough detail and do not differ greatly enough to really cause their silhouettes to be easily distinguishable at a glance.
If you've played and enjoyed other turn based strategy games (Civ V, XCOM), I'd say this game's a steal at full price even if you only come for the campaign. If this is your first entrance to any strategy game, I would suggest starting with something more critically acclaimed, and coming back during a sale or after the game's completion.

I believe this latest installment in the series has moved a bit away from the goals of the previous games of providing a more realistic experience, but it's still a very fun experience that has produced many memorable moments. The DLC offered is *mostly* purely cosmetic with no tactical advantage with the exception of the ghillie suit and some of the weapon skins. This game has ample free weekends I highly encourage you to try it then.

My friend Mitch (who likes feet) won't buy it, but it's a must-have.
