The gameplay is classic modern Castlevania but everything around that solid core feels a bit janky. It's quite an ugly looking game and certain areas look unfinished, although it is not as bad as it used to be... they almost got close to it looking decent. The actual game is a little buggy and lacking polish, just small things like items getting stuck in the ground (you automatically collect them but it still looks bad), and I crashed to desktop once and also got stuck floating in water which happens if you slide in. A lot of the enemies are just reskinned versions of the same creature with the same sounds and I also recognised some room layouts that were reused. The weakest area so far are the boss fights which feel particularly bad, like they don’t move around properly, especially when Castlevania bosses were usually very tightly designed. It feels like I’m fighting normal enemies with boss health bars, but they have such weak attack patterns that all you have to do is stand still and hold down the spell button to kill them.

All the weapons and spells are varied and fun to collect but I would 100% recommend starting on hard (there’s a code you can use) if you have any decent skill in games like this as most of the shards are very badly balanced and make the game too easy. I had to force myself to use bad spells and still did not die once on normal until I got to a late game boss.

Overall it's still worth playing, it's not a bad game but certainly not the best in the genre. You can tell they struggled a bit with this first game but I think Bloodstained 2 could be really good with the foundations they have set.

Hollow Knight is a masterclass in both world and character design. The game starts out slowly but quickly unravels into a sprawling world full of diverse environments and unique characters. The bug motif leads to a lot of imaginative enemies and creatures packed full of personality, while even non-essential NPC characters with only a few lines of dialogue are a joy to interact with. I felt like I was being pulled in five directions at once while exploring Hollownest, constantly finding paths leading to entirely new areas of the world. Exploration comes naturally and even backtracking through areas with new abilities is a pleasure as the map starts to connect together in unexpected ways. It's a testament to the concise world design that even so many disparate themes can fit together so well. The game is absolutely packed full of content and there are secrets to find everywhere too.

The biggest compliment I can give to this game is that after playing for 37 hours, achieving 100% and completing the alternate ending I still wanted to keep going. This game came out of nowhere and I bought it on a whim, but I was rewarded with one of the finest games I have ever played. If you are at all interested in Metroidvania games or just really good games in general, don't hesitate to pick this up. It is absolutely worth it.

I can't recommend it enough.
