I slam my 2008 red Jeep Wrangler car door shut, not wanting to start my morning by going to the gym. I began to rub my face because of how early it is and how tired I am at 8:15 AM. The seat of my car has instantly absorbed to me as I sink it makes me feel more comfortable than I normally would. I grab the steering wheel which felt as cold as the winter nights. As I’m trying to put the keys into the ignition, out of nowhere I drop the keys onto the muddy floor mat, I pick up the muddy keys and find connection with the ignition immediately. I turn the keys to startup the car right away, I take in one deep breath of the crisp October air as I slowly take my foot off of the break. I start coasting down the paved driveway, and right when I’m about to let my foot hit the gas I hear *Ba-Ding* I look down at my phone and I see my girlfriend, Nicole texted me “We need to talk, come over as fast as you can.”
As I begin to worry, I reply with “What’s wrong?” an unbelievable amount of thoughts and ‘what if’s’ rush to my head. Her mom has a heart condition she could of had a heart attack, her dad works as a construction worker something could have seriously injured him, her little brother gets bullied at school something bad could've happened to him. My first action was to instantly take the car out of reverse and move it into drive. I feel the car’s power underneath me as I press on the gas. I pull out of my block and onto a main road, time has never felt so long. I look at my phone to see if she replied yet, nothing. I glanced down again, checking the time, which seemed to go slower by the second. I started getting really sweaty, I realized the roads are less busy than normal and people were flying down the road which I was glad about because I wanted to get over to Nicole as fast as I can.
I glanced down at the picture I had of Nicole on my dashboard, it was the only thing keeping me somewhat sane. My heart was pounding out of my chest and my hands began to shake, I turned the heat to the highest it could go and my feet were tingling I didn’t know if it was because of how nervous I was or how cold it was in the car. Then I remembered that I had plans to go to the gym with Jake. I look up and around, I couldn’t spot any car’s near by. I look down quickly to see where my phone was and I pick up my phone without looking and open it by the thumbprint scanner, my phone was so hot because it was laying right in the way of one of the vents for the heater, I pull up my messages to text Jake. Luckily he was at the top so it didn’t take long for me to find his contact. I message him looking back and forth from the road to my phone saying “Hey dude I gotta cancel the gym today”. When I looked up I realized I hadn’t looked at the road for most of the text. But I didn’t care, the only thing that was on my mind was Nicole.
One other thing that ran through my head was to make sure there was no cops around as I am doing 80 on a 50. I don’t see any cars on the road so I hit the gas harder I look down at the speedometer I am past 90 climbing my way to a hundred, I’m about to look up but I hear my phone go off. My eyes flicked to my phone and I read the words that would change my life forever… “I’m pregnant”.
My mind is blank I don’t know what to think. I hear a semi truck horn to my left. I looked up and everything paused, the truck was coming at me so slow, I was barely moving when I was going 90 across an intersection. All of my memories came flooding back to when I was a little boy and all of the achievements I have made in my life. And all the best moments like holding my little sister as a newborn, winning my first pee wee football game, my first day of highschool when I met a kid that was going to be my best friend for the rest of my life, Jack. The moment that lasted the longest in my head with no time left in my life was when I met a beautiful, smart, gorgeous girl, Nicole. Reality hit hard, I look up and to the left seeing the grill of this semi come closer and closer to my Jeep. It hits the car, the seconds turn into what feels like days.
My car door starts caving in, the last thing I heard was the trucks impact against my car, then everything went mute. The glass from my window shattered, all of the little pieces came flying towards me, with some of them painfully scraping against my face. I start to feel the car lifting up from under me, leaving me in no control. My body weight started shifting, the only thing that was keeping me from ramming into the roof of my car was my seatbelt. As I helplessly looked around upside down, I began to notice my blood, everywhere. My vision began to get blurry from all of the blood loss, as I managed to open my eyes and focus I noticed the picture of Nicole, lying right above my head, on the roof of car. I reached out to touch the picture, all I can think of is her and how she has to raise our baby on her own. As I was touching the photo, my vision blurred and faded to black, all of a sudden the pain I had endured began to disappear. As I pushed out the last breath I would ever take...
