The best game to come out of TTLG's small repertoire, and the pinnacle of stealth gameplay. That being said, it's a pity that this title, now 20 years of age, beats out any other in the genre. The only competition that comes even remotely close are The Dark Project (Thief 1), Blood Money, and Chaos Theory. The art of having a stealth experience where it actually feels consequential to get caught has been lost for quite some time, but this game captures it perfectly.

Having the player explore the map without the objective being made obvious, especially for a a game of this sort, is a rarity nowadays. The map you are provided with only helps marginally in helping determine your position, and in later missions certain sections are omitted or blurred, forcing the player to improvise. Items that offer hints can be acquired, but they often come at a hefty price, and that gold can usually be put to better use, such as arrows (of varying utilities) and potions. The secrets in this game don't really feel like a chore, and are implemented mostly for the sake of player curiosity. Only when going for a completionist run, or needing to meet the the loot quota on higher difficulties, would it be advised for you to openly seek out as much as you can.

Sounds and visuals are the most important aspects of staying hidden. You could be moving in a pitch black area, tailing an unsuspecting guard, but it won't mean much if your tread too quickly on a stone path. Likewise, the use of moss arrows is rendered obsolete if you intend on heading towards the door with gas-powered lights. That being said, the AI relies far more on hearing the player than actually seeing them. Even so much as a thud onto the pavement will alert everyone within a large radius, and you will either be shoved into a dark corner or forced to neutralize. I enjoy challenging myself by going for absolute stealth, zero kill runs. I have taken note that following this method teaches patience, as waiting for the right opportunity to even just move to the next room can take what feels like an eternity.

Graphics have not aged well, but the gameplay mechanics and settings are still top notch. It requires some tinkering around to get it to work with newer systems. I recommend the tafferpatcher and T2fix for lighting/resolution and bug fixes respectively.

If you have the temperament for an experience that does not hold your hand throughout, and some selective NPC voice acting that sounds like it was ripped straight from a 90's porno, I would wholeheartedly advise you play this game. If not, I still think you should try, but expect to be frustrated by the clunky (but beautifully implemented!) mechanics of a bygone era in the video game industry.
