This game is fun either solo or with friends. Enough said.

Edit: I've won the game and it is pretty fun. The key factor to realize is that the archer is the most important character using the volley card. Once you get used to the game I really like the concept but it was challenging to mentally adjust to the different style of game (cool down vs turn based) coming from the turn based world. Using the slow down feature is essential until you get up to speed. On the higher levels it is absolutely critical to use the slow down feature to dodge tough opponents as them attack.

Note: you can pause the game at any time by pushing esc. there seems to be some confusion regarding that.

Original Review: Wartile is unique in that it tries to combine real time and turn based systems together. It makes for a unique system and a fun game but causes problems which they have introduced some creative features to address.

Good Stuff

Vikings, tile movement, fun story. multiple characters, pretty to look at, strategy ish stuff, feels unique which is very important to me.

The real time stuff actually makes it more challenging because you can't just play a chess game. you have to handle variable stuff all over the place.

Creative features to address the issues I listed below.

A slow option. if you push slow then it slows down. This should fix a lot of stuff... I just never use it... not sure why. Thinking about it now I think its because there is a lot of cool-downs associated with characters and I want to do the next set of actions after a cool down occurs. I'm not really sure there is a good workaround to this issue as it is just an issue with mixing turn based and real time.

Edit: I've tried using the slow down button and it works ok. It's a good compromise to a different issue.

Edit 2: I've won the game and on the higher levels you use the slow feature constantly. I didn't annoy me after I got used to it and overall I think the game is pretty awesome with it.

If you hit esc it pauses the game.

Frustrating stuff

Because it is real time you can often click on the wrong thing. Nothing is more frustrating then doing an action and then realizing you did the wrong action because you mis-clicked. Thankfully this doesn't happen a ton but when it does... oohhh sooo frustrating.

On one level there were ghosts. Cool. Well the ghosts have a hook that can pull your guy places. No worries. Well that hook can sometimes pull your guy to a completely different level that you can't reach unless going around the whole map. So your neighborhood friendly archor who isn't that tough but is argueable the best character because of the long distance capabilities gets grabbed and pulled up somewhere where she can't run away or do anything. Truly frustrating. Thankfully the ghosts seem to be on one map.

You play the same maps over and over again just on higher levels. You can play the same map multiple on different levels before doing other maps. This was really confusing for me at the start because I didn't realize I could go to other maps. Once I figured that out it wasn't an issue but I wish that you couldn't play the higher levels on the first round of the maps until you figured that out. It would have made the game more enjoyable at the very start.

The archer does not auto attack. You have to click on an arrow card and drag it to the guy you want to attach then the archer will continue to attach that guy. Once that guy is dead the archer will just sit there. Remember this is real time so you are losing valuable time having to refocus your archer. I read somewhere that this is intentional because they didn't want the archer to be a torrent. I guess I understand that logic but I do want a torrent with these options. (pause attack, fire at anyone, fire at a specific guy.)

Minor stuff

It is really hard to tell when you can move guys. I wish the base color changed when their cool down finished. went from orange to green or something.

It is really difficult to tell when a guy is frozen. If the base changed colors to indicate froze or something that would be helpful.

Edit: I just noticed that my archer has something like 40 health and the other guy has 100 health but the indicators are a percentage. I didn't really pay attention to the heath. if you click on your guy it shows you the actual health so you can see how much overall health is left.

When upgrading your guys it sure would be nice if the text showed red or green for the stats so you could quickly tell what was better.

I really enjoyed this game. For me it falls into the wonderful casual game category. It can be quickly paused at any second if you need to do anything and you can jump back in to play in a second.

I think the graphics are really creative and the story was pretty good.

They took the traditional platform style game, which I thought I hated but they changed my mind, and added 3 dimensions to it. So zombies come out of the background but you can't go into the background. They also give you weapons you can use but the primary objective is to avoid zombies so this definitely is not a hit and slash game. It is a puzzle game.

Early Access Review
This is a freemium game for the ios and android but is being charged a fee to play it on the pc. Well... I should clarify that. they removed the ability to buy stuff from the pc game but they left all of the stuff in there that is designed to slow down the game so that you buy stuff. very strange.... for example... I'm now waiting a few hours for some stuff to build.

This is the only game where I am glad to be interrupted while playing it because that means something will be done when I come back to the game.

Hopefully they remove all the painful delays from the game when it leaves early access.

Update: Ok. I've had some time to play the game and I'm now able to look beyond my overwhelming frustration with the time delay to provide some more feedback. (sort of able to look past it)

Pros:

1. I really like the look of the game
2. I also like how they let you model the land to build stuff on it. I think they got that one down pretty good.
3. I like how you have to grown your population to unlock stuff

Cons:
1. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE having to wait 3 days for something to be built. And that is what the timer says. 3 days. it actually takes even longer then that because your workers take naps. So it will probably be 4 or 5 days. I'm going to do a few minor things in the game then I don't expect to ever play it again unless there are some radical changes in the wait time.
2. I hate all of the stupid, pointless resources. you have belief which lets you build some stuff. Then you have to get wheat to build other stuff and then you have to get ore to build other stuff and then you have to have gems to do other things. So you end up having to create this huge infrastructure of ore to be able to unlock to portals and once they are unlocked they don't do anything.
3. This game wins for being the most frustrating game I have ever played.
4. So there is this In-Game game where you have to get your followers to go from one point to another point on a map. It makes me so mad because you can't control your followers and they are idiots. Oh and did I tell you it is timed. So you have to get your followers to go from point a to point b in a very short time frame with no control over them and things are trying to kill them and you have limited resources. Fun... it is not.
5. Oh yeah. so my theory that they took the free game from the ios and brought it to the pc was confirmed. They forgot to remove a button from the pc version which, when you click on it, tells you to buy gems at the store... except for the pc version doesn't have a store so... yeah...

Conclusion: If they got rid of the wait times and balanced out the other stuff I think I could recommend this game... right now where the game is there is no way I would ever recommend it.

Oh yeah my hours into this game are so big because I just leave it running in the background. It is a easy way to build up resources.

Update 2:

Ok They just released a new balance option which is AWESOME. It lets you eliminate a majority of the stupid timers so that the game is actually fun. So here is the deal.

I would actually recommend this game if the balance options, which allow you to speed up the timers, stay in the game. However, I'm under the impression that they are going to remove them once the game gets more developed. At that point I think the game will go from being awesome to sucking.

I actually came into this review specifically to update my review to be a recommend when, as I was typing, I realized that they probably are going to remove the balance options and then I'd have to update my review again. I'm just going to leave it as a not recommend until I get more concrete info that the stupid timers are going to stay in seconds rather then days.
