This game is incredible. It is also isn't just a "Typing of the Dead" clone, it actually shares much more in common with Cry of Fear and fixed-camera RE games.

Don't let the artstyle put you off, this game is a really unique take on survival horror that manages to make coop scary and stressful by maintaining clunky (but intuitive) controls. In my opinion that is why most modern shooter survival horror games fall flat, because FPS controls are so mainstream that everyone is adept with them and it's easy to never make a mechanical mistake.

As of writing this review I've only played the first level, but I was so caught off guard I felt I had to recommend it. Great stuff Outer Brain :D

One thing I would like to see is the ability to save outside of just checkpoints, and resume a game later. I know the levels (at least that I've played) aren't incredibly long, but it still would be a nice feature to have.

A very impressive recreation of STALKER areas and atmosphere inside of a voxel-style MMO/FPS on a custom engine. Mechanics are well executed, with a lot of love and playtesting clearly being put into this game. The blend of PvP and questing (with areas often overlapping) adds a nice tension to what would otherwise be mundane traveling. My only complaint would be TTK is perhaps too fast, but at least in the early hotspots (Cordon) spawns are nearby. During more end-game areas I could imagine the fast TTK being quite frustrating.

Performance is pretty excellent, with FPS hanging around 150-200 in populated areas with medium settings on a Ryzen 5 2600/GTX 1070.

Overall, I would definitely recommend checking it out for any STALKER/Survarium fan. It sure beats the hell out of that SZone-Online garbage.

Community is very helpful and welcoming, and the game is super fun with a healthy active playerbase. Pretty much the complete package.

Much faster pace than CS, with more varied weapon styles. Active community development and daily organized ranked games in the AQ2World discord make this one of if not the most accessible 90s shooter you can play today.

Seriously insane amount of traffic if you're EU or NA Eastern timezones, hundreds of matches each month. I came into the scene at the beginning of this year expecting a trickle of games like most AFPS/90s shooters, but instead I found a community with active ranked games where you can play as much or as little as you want on a given day. Seriously is unheard of in the Quake-verse.

Early Access Review
This game blows pretty much every other new AAA shooter out of the water.

Though I agree there is a long way to go, there is nothing like sitting down with a group of three friends, and playing a few games of Sacrifice or TDM. Despite most people's absurd view, Sacrifice is an extremely deep gamemode and it's very fun given time to adjust, and a willingness to learn.

Netcode needs some work, but is improving all the time, legitimately in the last month no damage direct hits have been almost completely resolved, literally had one of them in 40+ hours since that update.

Balance is in a very good place right now, since Sorlag was nerfed and Scale got buffed. (Visor needs a buff though, he's kinda useless, raise running speed to 330 instead of 310?) This game is inarguably 'Quake' in every way, blistering speed and skill based gameplay, they really have not changed the formula as much as many say, people just don't like to get used to new things. QC adds new depth, it doesn't lower the skill ceiling at all.

The better "arena shooter" is most certainly Reflex Arena, but the more fun game is QC, for sure. I haven't had this much fun with a game for such a long time for a long time. It has completely replaced CS and all other FPSs for me since April when I got access to it.

Community is extremely welcoming if you look, and you rarely find toxic players. Though a note on this is that on average players are very good and you will need to be inquisitive and ask questions to improve, this isn't a game you can buy and instantly be insane at just because you're good at other FPSs. Quake is referred to as "the Dark Souls of shooters" and that isn't said lightly.

Graphically it's stunning and runs very well, though I think optimization could go a tad further especially with respect to frame time, but that can be fixed at any time before release.

Extremely accessible competitive scene, where all you have to do is sign up for a weekly cup and play, no huge barrier between players and 'pros', Quake has always had the unique trait of having no artificial barrier between being good and being pro, it's all just based on skill and if you want to try to enter these tournaments.

The game is changing for the better constantly, and the developers are consistently asking the community and interacting on Reddit, Twitch, and pretty much wherever a dev has social media. (ie. Tim Willits taking hours to help trouble shoot a players netcode issue on instagram).

People need to be patient and look at this game's price tag and other games of this quality and their price tag. Sure it isn't as polished or precise as Quake Live yet but that doesn't mean it won't be soon, the game has improved exponentially since spring.

QC gets me excited for the amazing Duel and Team scene for competitive, and ranked matchmaking hopefully resparking the player base so that fun ranked games can happen, making this game check all the boxes for me.

Addressing F2P:
The free to play model has been criticized by some, which I truly don't understand. Every 5 levels you get a reliquary, which has a pretty decent chance of permantently giving you a champion, even if you are free to play. Even then renting a champion costs 5000 "Favour" (the currency you get for playing the game) which can be earned in 1 to 2 games, each of which are 10 minutes. These rentals last for a full day, not to mention you will easily earn enough favor to rent them again for days to come while using them for the one period you rented them.

Also, Ranger (the starting character) is a favorite among all players. Super balanced, powerful, not weak in any way. He is used by nearly everyone in duel because of his versatility, they did not start you with a "bad" champion because there are no "bad" champions.

Addressing movement:
This game's movement, once you handle strafe jumping or whatever specialized movement your favorite champions use, it is a dream to control. Absolutely the most fun I've had just moving around on an empty map before, nothing like skating around with Slash. It has the most satisfying smooth and momentum based movement of any shooter I have played.

Overall
TLDR: It's worth the buy, it's super fun, if you really want to wait for F2P you can, that system isn't terrible. The movement is a dream, absolutely beautiful. Mastering this game (or games in this genre) is the most satisfying thing you will ever do in games.

EDIT (6/29/19): The new F2P system is much better than the old one, the champions are very cheap to unlock with the in-game currency after minimal grinding.

ArmA 3 is a blast if you can get a bunch of friends together, and you have someone who is willing to put some time into editing.

I honestly really don't play any Life and very little of KoTH, but I was a mission editor for a clan in ArmA 2 so I continued making missions for ArmA 3. I would highly recommend using ACE and ACRE (or TFR) for Coop or PvP with friends or find a small or medium clan. I have had endless hours of fun with ACE, lots of intense coop moments, lots of panicking as the medic as people yell that they're bleeding and running from person to person patching them up while enemy fire screams above your head.

The game is truly unique and truly amazing, and completely worth the 60$ price tag.

Pros:
- Huge creative potential if you put some time into learning
- Large player base with many servers to play on
- Diverse gamemodes
- Fantastic Coop with friends (on your own missions, stock ones kinda suck)
- ACE and the modding community in general is fantastic.

Cons:
- Kinda ♥♥♥♥ optimization in certain community gamemodes, not BI's fault but still is an issue.
- Relatively hard to learn if you've never played anything but arcade shooters before and are not open to new control sets.
- The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC wall, completely stupid. I will pardon this for Apex though since that is an expansion pack.
