Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a game made by Fatshark, a studio known for its Vermintide games. This time we move to the world of Warhammer 40k, with the task of saving the planet flooded by Chaos, as a team of prisoners in the service of the Imperial Inquisition. Review edited after release.
Basics, and the Command Center
So, our main gameplay map is the Hive City on the planet Tertium, and our base is the Inquisition ship in orbit. This is where we buy new weapons, take contracts, train skills and choose missions. The command center is great, on the ship you can see that there are a lot of cool rooms and shops ( also a barber and combat trainer ). This time Fatshark has decided that the ship will be shared by all players, so during the exploration we will come across whole herds of lunatics in colorful pajamas. The training system is ok, the game explains everything quite well. The game has a clear interface, and after the premiere, everything was nicely condensed and explained. Everything has tons of modifiers, values, specializations and aspects, which is also great. But I saved the best for last, the character creator. We have 4 classes to choose from, each of them can be edited very nicely. We start by choosing the planet we come from, then we choose our current life path in 3 options, and then we move on to the standard character creator, which by the way is very transparent and full of possibilities. It's also cool that we can choose the voice for our character from 3 options, and each of them will affect how our character will interact with the world and other heroes.
Gameplay
As I'm not a Vermintide veteran, I can't say I'm anyhow good at the game, but overall I'm having a great time. The interactions between the characters are great, the weapons, although they are a bit similar at first, later become very diverse, and their appearance and sound effects are great. There is a good amount of maps and missions, so the gameplay is not boring at all. Talking about maps, the amount of large and small details is overwhelmingly huge, and it's fun to observe the environments around us. Enemies are divided into typical classes so there is no point in describing them, except that they look and act like Nurgle's cultists, i.e. their models look like zombies on steroids or like big slimy monsters spitting acid in all directions like a Pole after a night of drinking. I could complain a bit about the game balance, but it's not a big problem. The heart of the game is of course player cooperation and mixing character classes together, and it's done brilliantly, each class has something cool to offer and can complement each other nicely. And finally, I would like to say that I don't like the fact that you can't create private lobbies with bots like in Vermintide ( although from what I've seen allied AI is doing terrible, so maybe it's for the best ). There is only an option to play with other players, and only after 10 hours of gameplay, I've realized that there is an option to use a microphone at all, when during the game, out of nowhere, some pissed off Russian started screaming into my ear. Of course we also have standard chat, but I've noticed that most people ignore more advanced communication options, while preferring tags, commands etc.
Technical Matters
The game sometimes crashes to the desktop, matches are ruined by random server failures, and the optimization is just beyond ♥♥♥♥, this game is just unplayable at times. I know that some moments are quite chaotic, but it doesn't change the fact that it pisses me off, because I have pretty good computer, and after all it's the type of game that tests the speed of player reactions. If I had to praise something, of course, the voice actors did a great job, but the jewel of this game is the music, which is brilliant, it adapts nicely to what is happening, giving the battles much epicness and dynamic.
Summary
It's a really brilliant game with an amazing potential, and I hope to see new character classes, enemies, and locations in the future. Currently the optimization is a massive problem, I hope they will fix it soon. I recommend it to everyone who likes Warhammer and wants to take some stress off, shooting filthy heretics.
