This is the oldest example I've found of a "Mass Effect type" game. Although since this predates Mass Effect, perhaps Anachronox could be considered a first of it's kind? This game resembles the bioware take on RPGs so much that playing it gave me a kind of false nostalgia- a fondness for my memories playing and replaying KOTOR 1 and 2 and being blissfully ignorant to the primitive graphics and janky controls.

The characters in this are strange and hilarious, it's like a kids show from the 90's or something, cartoony and fun. But the game suffers from its age, the quests required to move forward can be tedious or confusing. There's a really unique primary mechanic of the game that uses your cursor as a way to interact, i don't know if i've seen any game expand on those ideas, actually..

If you want more like Mass Effect or KOTOR, try this out. It's older but you travel space with a cast of characters.

EDIT: the hours it shows is INCORRECT, most of my playthrough was offline.

The trick to this game is finding a DUMMY GOOD weapon. Like a rocket launcher with infinite magazine size, or a machine gun with seeking explosive projectiles. I love the unique upgrade system, how everything ties back into the main game loop, while keeping it fresh and fun. If you like DOOM-likes that play FAST.

Don't even think about it - BUY IT.

Stardew had a baby with a shooter roguelike and it works shockingly well. ADDICTING.

Dishonored but survival horror, with a trippy scifi story. Good.

Get Daggerfall Unity! This is a great but old game that has actually aged decently, all things considered. The game is even LESS hand-holdy than Morrowind, which leads to you creating much of your own narrative, and tracking your quests through simple journal entries instead of quest markers. Yes, this means you have to remember people's names, and negotiate completing quests in a more direct way than just 'walk here, push button'. There's a constant drama occurring in the background of this world, and certain events become relevant by nature of your alliances. The map is quite large with many MANY towns of varying sizes, but with less detail that you might expect from later titles. Still, the world does feel bigger when you play. You will mostly fight in dungeons, which will be sprawling and puzzling, but not impossible... most of the time. Learn to use your quicksaves like a real gamer and you'll be ok.

The first Battlefield game I've actually spent real time playing. It's magnificent, the destructible buildings and landscape keeps you on your toes, the chaotic FEEL of battle is really there. Very beautiful game, incredibly immersive, plays almost like a movie at times. Playing with WWI weaponry is surprisingly fun, the action is thrilling.

It's pretty great, but don't expect a ton of depth in the combat if you're used to Dark Souls and enjoy a challenge. The ceiling of difficulty is not very high, but the variety of abilities definitely is. End game is basically a power fantasy, with plenty of content to keep playing after you beat the final mission.

CS:GO Review
Best all around gunplay presented by a modern game. The new Battle Royale mode is just an optional activity, but the competitive mode continues to be one of the most compelling game modes I've ever played. All these people complaining are entitled losers. This game is being updated more now than it ever has and all of it in the right direction. There's literally no reason not to download this game now for free and see if you enjoy it.
